Katrina

Post by Sally »

I just heard that Grand Isle, Louisiana, (where Allen and I were going for New Year's) has broken in two and the remains are under 20 feet of water. Everyone who did not evacuate is presumed dead.

I don't have family and friends in the areas affected by Katrina, but somehow what has happened to Grand Isle makes it very personal.

If you want to help, please log onto this site and give what you can.

http://www.mercycorps.org/

This is a very reputable charity and most of what you give gets to the people who need it.

This is our tsunami.

Lots of love and sorrow,

Sally

Here is another...a friend of mine works for them and sent the following message to her friends and family, so I'll pass it on to all of you. Katy

America's Second Harvest – the Nation’s Food Bank Network is one of the nonprofit partners for the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA). We’re one of the primary responders, along with the Red Cross & Salvation Army and others, during a disaster such as this, with our efforts focused on coordinating emergency food relief efforts, warehousing, and transportation of food, water, and disaster supplies that are so greatly needed in the affected areas and the surrounding communities overwhelmed by evacuees.

We’re working to raise several million dollars to support immediate relief efforts in the affected states and to re-establish the emergency food networks which have been devastated in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. I don’t typically ask friends and family for support for my organization; however, financial donations for relief efforts are greatly needed at this time and I see first hand the great work that my colleagues working directly on the disaster team are doing to get food to those in need.

The home page of our website, www.secondharvest.org, enables you to easily make a donation with a credit card or will provide details for contributing in other ways.

Financial contributions are much more valuable than food and clothing drives at this time, as transportation is such a challenge and the items that are needed for emergency relief differ in each affected area.
