Protein powder for shakes and smoothies

Post by Gabby »

A dietician recently recommended I try a protein powder made by a company called Sunwarrior (www.sunwarrior.com) to make shakes and smoothies. Sunwarrior is made from "raw sprouted whole grain brown rice." They claim it is gluten free. I will be glad when there is actually a standard that companies have to follow to make that claim.

Anyway, I have been using it for about a week to make a breakfast smoothie and I really like it. I have only tried the chocolate flavor so far. They make vanilla, chocolate and "natural" flavors. I seem to tolerate it really well. I find it keeps me feeling satisifed all morning and I feel good (no bloating, gas, D.)

I think the chocolate flavor is very good. It has a little sweetness (sweetened with stevia) and a very nice smooth chocolate taste. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say it has a chalky texture on the tongue. It is not gritty but chalky. This doesn't bother me, but if you read reviews on Amazon you will find some people who can't tolerate it. So, request a sample first before investing in a whole bag. It is not cheap. To get a sample you have to make an email request.

Does anyone else have experience with this Sunwarrior product?
Does anyone else have a GF SF protein powder that they would recommend?

Thanks
Gabby

Gabby,

We sometimes use a hemp protein powder - hemp seeds are the sole ingredient. I seem to tolerate it, but have dialed down my serving size because I am going slooow (tortoise/hare theory of food intolerance discovery).

We tried two brands, and one of them drove my husband crazy texturewise. Unfortunately, we can't remember which it was, so we're going to wind up repeating this experiment. For now he's liking Manitoba Harvest brand's product called Hemp Pro 70 - it's supposed to be more water soluble. It is labeled SF/GF. It contains 'natural plan extracts' - which I ought to write to them and inquire about, but won't have a chance till after our upcoming vacation. (www.manitobaharvest.com for more info - we found ours much less expensively in a local store, but maybe I'm comparing CanBucks to $USD.)

The smoothie breakfast is a beautiful thing on a hot day! We use frozen greens, which I tolerate in smoothie form pretty easily, in somewhat higher quantities than I trust raw or even as a side veg. I think this helps me distinguish the 'chemical' reaction of intolerance from the sheer physical irritation of a ton of leafy greens (for example). Frozen turnip greens are great in a smoothie - who would guess? I have a plan for corn season along these lines - hoping to be healed enough to dare.

I also use soaked/blanched/peeled almonds sometimes - it's not as much of a protein punch as a protein powder, but it does have some oomph and balances the carb-ness of fruits in a good way for me.

I hope this helps. Not everything works for everyone of course - either for our gut or our tastebuds ;)
