Doctor report....

Post by Mars »

I am scheduled for a Complete blood workup which will include Kidney and Liver functions, CBC, Lipid (Cholesterol) and Comp. Metabolic workup. Thyroid will also be checked.

The doctor believes that I have what they call "pre-diabetes". I have all the classic symptoms and we have been having conflicting readings on the sugar for the last few months. He said it is important for me to eat at LEAST 3 times per day, probably more in smaller quantities.

He also ran a urinalisys (checking for protein) = None but found blood in my urine. I have to be rechecked in month. If it is still there, I will have a complete kidney workup. Could be anything including stones or could be nothing. He said not to worry right now.

So.....I am going for the blood workup on Friday morning and will know any abnormalities within a week.

As for the flare - "who knows" he says! I am going to begin taking the levbid, 2 pills on day one and 1 pill on day two and alternate to see if this will help with the D.

So far.....that's my news.

Thanks for keeping us updated Margie. I'm glad you're getting the tests and that they are trying to get to the root of the problem.

Would it be glib of me to say in our case who knows what the heck causes the flares?!? I'm pretty sure my last bad one was stress-related...but I also dropped the Entocort and went back to Asacol.

I'll make a deal with you - you try and eat better and so will I - 'kay?

Love ya

 Count me in for being glad you are getting all the testing.

Also, if they don't find a reson for the blood in the urine (assuming it's microscopic), don't worry about it. I have had that for years. Had it checked out twice and they found nothing either time. I'd love to know why it's there but I guess it's not all that rare.

Maybe Polly knows something more about it.

Hang on, Mars. We are all pulling for you.

I'll take you up on that deal :pigtail: ! I really HAVE to do this. I just forget to eat or don't feel like it. Then when I do get around to eating, I can't eat because of the nausea. Probably from waiting too long.

What a vicious circle!

I will do my best to do my best - How's that!

Barb - no one in my family with diabetes. I have many things going against me though (weight, high BP, etc.) I'll get this figured out (I hope!)

Shirley - I'm not real worried about the blood. It is microscopic so it isn't a lot. You can have it from doing exercises or from something you aren't used to doing. After my potty trots yesterday - it could be from that! Who knows! We'll see in a month's time. I am curious about the results of the blood workup though. I'll know the results of them within a week I suppose.

Hi Mars,

Excellent! Now we're getting somewhere. That should provide enough informatiion to allow you and your doctor to devise a workable plan.

If I remember correctly, roughly a year ago you had a fasting blood sugar test result over 125, (about 140, wasn't it?), and then a retest was down in the normal range. I thought at the time, that your doctor should have followed up on that with another test, but he didn't seem concerned.

Even so, you still miight be able to stay out of the diabetes classification by carefully controlling your eating habits, so as to stabilize your blood sugar levels.

The blood in the urine is nothing to worry about, as it is normal to pass a certain number of red blood cells in our urine every day. I'm not sure what level is required to be classified as microscopic hematuria, but at least 10% of the population is classified that way, so you're in good company. It can even be caused by certain meds.

Love,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

BTW - the water pill that I was concerned about (due to sulfa) CAN cause a true reaction to someone who is allergic to sulfa but normally it does not. The warning was to alert those who are so they are aware of problems.

Doc said that this is the same type of water pill that is in my BP meds and I handle it well.

Mars,

Glad to see you are getting somewhere. As Wayne says, microscopic hematuria is usually not a big deal. I have had it myself at times and then it goes away on a repeat test.

Did your doc give you advice on WHAT to eat?

Love,

Polly

Hi Polly Wolly,

No, no advice on WHAT to eat!?! Any suggestions????? Still having these ups and downs with D and the nausea and dizziness. Swelling is still pretty much apparent but not as bad as it was a few weeks ago.

Hey, Jr.

I'm sorry that I haven't had a chance to get up with you the past few days...My SIL that I told you about is here, and she keeps me busy trotting back and forth..LOL. Seriously, I'll be glad when she flys her butt back to AZ..One more week..WHEW!

I didn't know you were still having problems, last I talked to you, you were doing better.

I am glad that your doctor is doing further testing. If you are having early signs of diabetes, it can most likely be controlled with diet, and exercise. A good place to start, Mars..would be to cut back on carbs and cut out all sugar. Limit your sweets to low sugar fruits. Don't cut out all carbs, or you will get sick. I will try to find more time on the computer, and help you with things to eat..if you would like. I'm no expert, but I was very sick with low blood sugar..which is a warning that diabetes will follow if changes aren't made..and I am symptom free now.

I will give you a holler later on this evening, and till then, I'll be thinking of you, and hoping you are having a better day. :???:
Love ya,

Geri
