Immodium

Post by Temple »

Does anyone else use Immodium to control MC symptoms? My gastro said I have a "mild" case of MC and that I could probably control it with Pepto or Immodium. I have been on a gluten-free diet for a year and that has helped a lot, but I still have flare-ups, especially when I am under stress. I know some people on the IBS web site talk about "maintenance Immodium" meaning they take a regular dose of it to control things. Any feedback is appreciated!

Hi Temple,

Congrats on being on the GF diet for a year. It is great that you are feeling better on it. If you still experience "flare-ups" on occasion odds are that you are actually getting a source of gluten or anther one of your food triggers that is hidden to you. Next time you have a flare-up try to analyze what you have eaten - if there are anything new in your diet during that time; a new product or brand of product that could be the source of your trigger. Are you intolerant of anything else besides gluten?

Your question about immodium would probably get better response in the General Discussion Forum than here in the diet room. I think I have heard of other people using immodium too. It never did anything to help me back when I was having diarrhea; now I don't need it since my diet controls all symptoms - even when I am under great stress.

Try posting your question in the general discussion forum.

Hi Karen,

But this is supposed to be the right forum for that question. This is not the old GF Kitchen, it's a place to discuss ALL treatment options. I probably slipped that past you in the title of the forum, when you weren't looking. LOL.

Temple,

Thinking about what you said, if diet alone won't control the symptoms of MC, then you might have some other intolerances that you haven't yet discovered, or your doctor may be wrong about you having a "mild" case of MC.

That said, I believe there are several other members of this group who sometimes use and/or keep handy, immodium or something similar, when they are traveling, and/or under additional stress.

Nearly all of us occasionally experience an occasional flareup. Sometimes we know why, and sometimes we don't, but then, even normal people have occasional GI issues, so it stands to reason that we would occasionally have problems also, no matter how well our treatment program normally works.

Uh-OH, Wayne -

I'm wrong again  Well, of course

Sorry, Temple - my confusion no doubt has caused more confusion. Hope you will get responses that are more meaningful than mine.

 Don't sweat it, Karen, and your advice was meaningful, except for posting it in the other forum - LOL.

Temple,
I don't use immodium either but I would if I were having problems and needed to go out in public for more than a short trip.

Congrats on being GF for a year.

I try not to look a year down the road because I recently started the Paleo diet and I can't afford to think about "doing without" some things for...for...for...FOREVER!!! There!!! I said it!!

I usually carry Imodium with me just in case I have problems. In fact I have a bottle in each of the cars, one at work and one that I carry in my pocket if I'm going somewhere, like say Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle.

The only problem I have with taking it is that I get constipated for the next day or so.

Hi All,

I looked up the ingredients for Imodium and none of them look to be gluten free...

Hi Jean and all,

I just had the feeling that immodium contained one or more of my triggers; I remember taking it like a mad woman in my first month of dealing with MC-Diarrhea and it seemed to get worse the more immodium I took; however, it was chronically bad so I wasn't sure about Immodium; I just knew it didn't help me at all.

Would you mind listing the ingredients and pointing out which allergens are contained in them?

Thank you!

Love,
Karen

Karen,

Which form of Immodium did you take? Liquid or tablets?
