Has anyone ever tried taking/using Coconut Oil? I have read it is very beneficial...

I'm using Coconut oil. It's great for frying (and also very soothing for dry skin).

I haven't used it for baking yet, but it's famous for being useful that way. Lots of vegans use it instead of butter.

My next project is going to be egg-free savory coconut macaroons - I'll let you know how that goes. I'm still in the daydreaming phase, but do plan to use the oil as well as shredded coconut.

I like it! I haven't taken it as a supplement, just using it in food. We also put a little in our morning smoothie one day, because we had too much fruit and not enough of everything else.

I'll be interested what you're thinking of using it for, and what you think if you try it,

Hi Sara,
someone mentioned it to me and I have just been reading up on it online. I am reading mixed reviews, helping the diarrhea in some people and causing it with others..I just wanted to see if anyone had any good or bad experiences with it before I go out and buy some

I can't say that it has helped or hurt my D - which is much better, but I'm not having daily perfect Normans, either.

I am probably not taking a 'therapeutic dose' - just using it the way I'd use butter or olive oil, for example. I am now adding a little more fish oil to my smoothies very gradually, but generally find too much of an oil increase to be a little risky. Unless you are sensitive to coconut, I would guess that a little won't hurt. But if you have to try a lot to see whether it helps with D, I would start small and increase very gradually.

What else are you doing, as far as diet modification and medication, and how's the D (and other symptoms) in general?

I am celiac so I avoid gluten like the plague. I have been dairy free for about 4 months and trying to be soy free. I went to see a homeopathic DR and he did a food panel and now I stay away from yeast and sweet pot. (my other sensitivities). I have been doing this for the past month and my D has gotten worse. I am to the point where I am just frustrated and have been losing even more weight. Just don't know what to do now..

Well, well, I was just reading about the anti-bacterial, anti-fuungal benefits of caprylic acid, which is found in coconut oil. Apparently it's not that abundant in coconut, so many people take it as a supplement instead (which I am seriously considering). Not sure if I'll do it solo, or consult a naturopath first. I'm doing this as a natural alternative to the nuclear Rifaximin and Flagyl cocktail that I've been contemplating (and would need to convince my doc to order). I've always responded favorably to antibiotics in the past, not to mention the remission after my colonoscopy, so I think my case may benefit from a clean-out of these darn unhelpful intestinal critters.

I do eat macarroons instead of cookies and I often cook with coconut oil. But I'm probably not ingesting enough to notice any beneficial qualities. I'm restarting the fish oil and probiotics now too. Gotta try something. I've got watery D all the time now and I'm not cheating on the diet! GRRR!!!

Hi JMay,

I eat about a tablespoon of dried flaked coconut (unsweetened) at breakfast every day. It really helped control my D before I found out about gluten. Now that I am GF, DF, and SF, I still eat the coconut. I started with coconut macaroons--mentioned to me by my GI doctor, of all things--but I didn't care for the sweetneess, so I went to the flaked coconut.

I use coconut oil for most of my cooking. You can use it in baking, too, but you have to reduce the amount, otherwise it makes your baked goods oily. After lots of years of thinking coconut oil was bad for you, I have now discovered that it is in fact a good oil. Something about being a medium chain fat rather than a long chain fat.

Some people have mentioned that coconut gives them D, so you'll have to try it out and see how you react to it. I prefer the less expensive kind of coconut oil, which doesn't have a coconuty flavor.

I do hope not, but either or both of you might have an additional food sensitivity. I am really hoping to be figure it all out myself, but may do MRT testing down the road, and the LEAP program (which sounds daunting... but we know we can do daunting).

Have either of you tried eliminating all grains? I know I am a broken record about - whatever my topic du jour is, and today it's "no grains." So far, I really feel significantly better than I did when eating of rice/rice crackers, etc. I was also eating a lot of potatoes and potato chips, and have cut them out, too.

It sounds so negative when I write it that way, but I'm actually all focused on what I *am* eating. What fruits/greens go in the breakfast smoothie, what meat/veg for lunch etc...

When I am flaring, I seem to flare just because I am flaring. I've only had to go back on "lock down" once since I started getting better (all homemade, all the time, lots of chicken broth and very few other things - everyone's list might vary). Maybe a few days of treating yourself like a tummy flu patient would let your body hit 'reset'???

Z, I hope you don't *have* to do the Flagyl, it's nasty stuff. But it is powerful nasty stuff. I know that the added stress of life-at-the-moment can't help, either.

I do believe that adding an ingredient (supplement, food, probiotic, medication) is secondary to subtracting potential problems. You can always add back in anything that's not a true issue. I know how hard that is to pull off, in reality.

I have been GF for about 3+ weeks and also trying to be sensible with lactose. I ate some SO coconut ice cream and had a lot of gas and cramps. Tried it again just to be sure and got the same reaction twice. I can eat Tofutti ice cream without a problem. When the D was at its worst I was eating 2 homemade coconut maccaroons (with chocolate flakes added) a day thinking that it would help. It didn't. I think it is an individual sensitivity and we all have to find out for ourselves what our bodies will tolerate.

I keep checking the Entero lab site looking for my results. I just simply cannot wait!!!! :weirdnana:

If I take out rice, potatoes, etc. I feel like I will not be able to eat anything! I already have to stay away from eggs (not sure if i mentioned that above)...I can't have any fruits or veggies bc they are too rough. I'm getting so discouraged.

I'm lucky to be able to have sweet potatoes - and am now tolerating a lot of fruit/veg, as well as meat. I can't have eggs either (what a pity party I threw *that* day!). You sound like a great candidate for MRT, and Mary Beth reports there is a new/updated version that should be available soon.

I'm so sorry you're in this frustrating situation, and can totally understand/sympathize that you feel discouraged.

I wish I had better ideas to offer!
