Drs. appointment yesterday

Post by dgshelton »

I saw my endocrinologist yesterday. The first thing she said as she was walking in the door was, "What in the world is going on with your bowels!". I am lucky that she and my internal med dr. are brother and sister and share my records. He had pointed out to her my test results. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the subject of their family get togethers. I sure hope not for their sake. Then her next question was "Do you really have sprue?" I told her that's what all the evidence points to, but no, I did not have an "official" diagnosis of celiac. I told her how much better I was feeling after removing gluten, dairy, soy and eggs fro my diet. How my aches and pains are diminishing and my acne is going away. She mentioned that she has several insulin pump patients that have MC who are having a really hard time controlling their D. She then said she is going to tell them to go gluten free to see if it makes a difference. I told her about the DQ8 gene that I have and how it's been linked to adult onset type 1 diabetes (I was 19 when diagnosed). She also found that very interesting. Another thing she said was that all the literature she reads says that celiac is prevalent in type 1 diabetics, but that she only has a couple of patients with it. That made her start wondering about having them tested at Enterolab for gluten antibodies. Anyway, I think I've put a bug in her ear that has her wanting to do some research. She and her brother both try to keep up with the latest research. We'll see what she says when I go back in October.

Hugs,
Denise

Good for you, and kudos to your doctors. You'll never know how many other patients you've helped, by opening your doctors' eyes, but you can bet that it will add up to many, many people, over the years.

Hugs,

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Wow, Denise, that is wonderful on so many levels!

What a terrific, open, and genuinely caring doctor - I'm impressed and amazed that she cares more about her patients than about knowing everything, and is willing to ponder what you've said on behalf of others.

YAY!!!

Love,
Sara

WOW! I think it's great that her and her brother share info on patients. Way too often a patient visits numerous specialists who all do their own thing without consulting with one another and wind up doing more harm than good. I'll bet you've helped many, many other patients!
That made her start wondering about having them tested at Enterolab for gluten antibodies.
I may have to consider moving to Louisiana just to have a better doctor! LOL!

I am so blessed with my dynamic duo. I have been seeing my endocrinologist for about 15 years. She and I have a wonderful relationship. I started seeing her brother about six years ago, when I had a problem with so many different drs. treating me for different things. I didn't feel like any of them paid attention to who was prescribing meds or what meds were being prescribed for my different ailments. I was complaining to my endocrinologist about having been prescribed prednisone, which she wasn't happy about at all. I knew there was an internal med dr. with the same last name as her, so I asked if her husband would see me. She looked at me funny and said, my husband is a cardiologist, I don't think he could help you. She then realized that I meant her brother. She thought it was funny. I didn't know that she had kept her maiden name. I love them both so much! My son was my endocrinologist's second "pump" baby. She was in the room when he was delivered. I feel like I'm part of their family and they are part of mine.

Arlene - Come on down. I think we're having a cold front come thru next week. It will only be 98 instead of 102-103. We may need to break out the out the sweaters! LOL

Hugs,
Denise

How nice to read that your endocrinologist listed to you and praised how you've managed your symptoms. She must have a lot of respect for you. As others have written, others are going to benefit from your sharing.

Good job!

If only they had a sibling that is a GI. My GI is just like all the others, a skeptic and a naysayer. :sigh:

Kudos to your team of doctors Denise. If only they were all so willing to listen and learn.
