Don't eat KFC!

Post by Sharaine »

Well, once again I blew it. We went to an art show last weekend where my husband was selling his photography. One night we were so exhausted that we just grabbed KFC on the way back to our hotel room. I specifically got one grilled chicken breast. I also bought a baked potato from Wendy's. Unfortunately, soon after eating the chicken, I began to bloat. I spent several trips over the next 24 hours going to the restroom with very loose stools, diarrhea. I was very disappointed because I tried to be careful.

The next night we ate at a Mexican Restaurant. They had a gluten-free menu!! When I explained I can't have gluten or dairy, the waitress wrote my order for fajitas carefully. They even served gluten-free corn chips which they buy in bags and do not cook with their own homemade chips. I was so happy! And I didn't have a reaction that night.

This coming weekend is another conference, this time the west coast. I'm armed with Enjoy Life cereal, Larabars, and a water bottle.

Tomorrow is my first follow up appointment since my diagnosis on June 13th. I'll be interested to see if I can drop to 6mg Entocort instead of the current 9mg.

Sharaine,

Sorry to hear about your KFC encounter. It's funny, I didn't eat a lot of "convenience food" before MC, but there sure are times when something convenient is called for, and it's really a bummer when we get it wrong.

Good luck at your follow-up appointment tomorrow - and good luck stocking up for the upcoming conference,

Sara

Sharaine,

I used to love KFC when I needed something fast and tasty, too, but I haven't been to any of the Colonel's locations in over 9 years, now, because as far as I'm aware, virtually nothing there would be safe for me to eat.

Good luck at your followup, tomorrow.

Morning Sharine,

I was going to go to KFC - like Sara very rarely eat convenience food or even restaurant food. However, before any whim at fast food I go to their website and check the allergy guide and darn if every piece of chicken at KFC whether grilled or fried, has gluten. Please, if anyone can, tell me why grilled chicken has gluten?

Love, Maggie

I've been dissapointed to learn that many Peruvian rotisserie chicken places in my area - they are virtually on every corner - marinate their chickens in beer! Many celiacs relied on those places, and now we have to ask 20 questions before eating there, usually to people who have no idea what gluten is.

My biggest pet peeve is gluten in fast food french fries. They are often the one place with dedicated friers for the fries, so why do they have to come with gluten-containing "flavors" or dusted in flour?? AARGH!

I hear ya Sharaine! I was amazed to find out that Chic-Fil-A has gluten in every one of their chicken dishes as well!! I think the first year is the hardest when it comes to figuring out what you can and can't eat and what to eat when you're out and about. Good Luck to you and hang in there!!
