Opted only for genetic testing. Results as follows:
HLA-DQB1-both alleles identical-0301. Serologic equivalent=HLA DQ 3,3(7,7)
Per report I carry double dose of gluten sensitivity gene and passed one copy to each of my four adult children. It is of interest that one daughter has uveitis and elevated rheumatoid factor, another has already eliminated gluten from her diet. I was diagnosed w/ CC in 2005, suffer from uveitis, multiple drug and environmental allergies and bronchiectasis (also seen in Chron's & ulcerative colitis). Thank's to this website, I have been gluten-free for 2+ years. CC symptoms 90% controlled. Sheila

Hi Sheila,
Whoa! - double DQ3 genes. That's not a very common configuration. Apparently it must predispose to uveitis and chronic bronchial inflammation. It's good to hear that your children are beginning to take notice, and hopefully they will all modify their diet, as needed, if, (or before), any symptoms begin to show up.
Thanks for posting your results. I hope you won't mind if I add your results to our collection.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Sheila,
Great to hear that your MC is mostly controlled, and I hope you continue to improve in the other health areas as well. I think it's wonderful that you've passed this important information on to your children, as well as your genes. Though I'm sorry to hear they've already had autoimmune issues crop up, it's great that they can do something about it, and that you're showing them how.
I am pretty sure my brother & his kids won't take notice of my results until/unless something pretty awful befalls them, but I'm hoping they'll at least think of gluten sensitivity early in the game, before wandering through a wilderness of mis-diagnosis (or non-diagnosis) and possibly ineffective treatment (or worse)...
All my best,
Sara

Tex,
Feel free to add my results to your collection. I dug a bit further into the meaning of my results on Dr. Fine's website last night. Fine says ~19% of Americans have DQ 7,7. This allele pair is ALMOST IDENTICAL IN STRUCTURE TO DQ2,2! Wonder if the illustrious Dr. Fasano is aware of this.
Sara,
Hope your family members come around. As more information on the harmful effects goes mainstream, maybe they will wake up. Sheila

Sheila,
I hope they'll wake up before they are forced to by some awful health consequence. I "had a feeling" for some time that gluten wasn't working for me (had given up beer, passed on the bread at restaurants...) but didn't know I was gluten sensitive till I was sick as a dog. Luckily, no one is currently suffering, and there are no *known* autoimmune things going on.
I do think the extended public awareness will help. I'm thinking I might be able to persuade my brother to have his youngest tested...
In my mind, the difference between "gluten sensitive" and "celiac" is pretty unimportant for most of us - certainly for you, and for me. (I might really 'qualify' as celiac, but I haven't had a biopsy, nor a test for the antibodies in blood, which I don't need because I already know the genetics and the antibodies are there.) I really wonder where this notion comes from that a little gluten will do more harm to a 'celiac' person than to someone who's intolerant. Uveitis and bronchial inflammation are no joke.
Wishing you (all of us!) health,
Sara

I'm pretty sure that he's aware of Dr. Fine's discoveries, but I have a hunch that, like the rest of Dr. Fine's work, he's doing his best to try to ignore it, and he's probably trying to prove it wrong.Sheila wrote:Wonder if the illustrious Dr. Fasano is aware of this.
