Trying to school yet another doctor on the evils of gluten
Hi, everyone! The move went off without a hitch. We are slowly getting everything unpacked and in it's place.
I had a drs. appointment with my pain specialist that I've been seeing for around six years for my fibromyalgia pain, which, by the way, has "mysteriously" disappeared since giving up gluten. I have been on long term pain management with narcotics. I have never liked taking them and have attempted to get of of them a couple of times with no luck. I told my dr. that the pain has dimished so much that I'm ready to stop for good. He looked at me like I was absolutely crazy and asked what in the world had changed since I last saw him. I told him I had given up gluten. He laughed and asked how I thought that had helped. I just love it when a dr. laughs at you! Anyway, I told him my theory was that my pain was being caused from lack of vitamins and minerals, that the damage in my gut was preventing me from absorbing them and now that my gut is healing, my vitamin levels are returning to normal. His laugh turned to more of a hmmm. He congratulated me on finding a cure for myself and said we could "try" stepping me down over the next few weeks to see if I could stop taking the narcotics. He was not very optimistic sounding when he said that. Maybe he's afraid I'll share what I've found with all of his other patients and put him out of business. One can only dream! I've never cared for this dr. and would love to never have to see his smug face again. I'm going to take this as a challenge and prove to him that it can be done!
Hugs,

Wow, Denise. I hope you can prove him wrong. I suppose gluten accumulation in your bones and soft tissues, along with circulating immune complexes reacting to the gluten, may also be an explanation for the fibromyalgia pain. Medicine is certainly big business that cannot afford to have patients getting better with free, doctor-less solutions.
Denise,
Awesome!
Good luck with your your plan to teach him how it's done.

Tex
P. S. Just out of curiosity, did you happen to use aspartame before you started the diet?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex - I never liked the blue stuff. I've either used sweet-n-low or splenda. That's not to say that I didn't ingest aspartame in sugar free products, but I usually try to find one that has splenda on the label. I did find that article very interesting, though.

Zizzle - It's interesting that while I was in the waiting room yesterday, I noticed that a lot of the people were very thin with bloated looking stomachs. I had never noticed that before, but I also wasn't aware before of the gluten connection to fibromyalgia.

WOW, Denise. I hope you get to see that smug look wiped OFF his face, right before you never have to see his smug face again.
I know it's not your style, but you could try to sound a little condescending when you explain to him that the connection between fibromyalgia and celiac disease, and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, is so clear that *celiac disease is frequently misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia* - and you're surprised he's not aware of this. (Of course you're not surprised, that's just a little white lie...)
Glad to hear the house move is going so well. Congratulations - and even more so on knocking another medical condition and another wiseacre M.D. right on out of your life!
Love,
Sara

Glad the move went smoothly. Hope you enjoy your new digs.
Your doc doesn't sound open to learning anything new, which is unfortunate. But the good news is that you found relief naturally and may not need much help from him in the future.
I have an appt with a new doctor tomorrow and am armed with articles and a video (on mast cell activation). Fingers are crossed that he will listen to me.
