My youngest started High School!
She came home quite upset...her best friend isn't in ANY of her classes & they don't have lunch together. She HATES high school! She is sooo shy just like I was. I can sure relate how she feels. Give her a week and she will adjust. The school is huge about 2500 students. I can't relate to that! We only had 500 total in my small town high school.
I don't know where the time has gone....it seems just yesterday that she was a baby! Sniff, Sniff.
Hugs

I can't relate to the 2500 either, Lori, and I very glad I can't. There was just under a hundred in my graduating class and that was only because in my junior year we consolodated with another small school.
When I was going through the "teenaged children" years it seemed as if they would never end. Looking back, it went very fast. Now my oldest grandson is a senior.

Lori,
I can relate to the school thing and where the time goes. My daughter Lannie started middle school today which is a big jump from grade school thing- everthing has changed in a New York minute for her after her first day- she's fine, but sort of in shell shock but I thinks it's normal for girls this age. Her mind seems to be in nomad land--but in general she's always been a good student so there is hope. Her friends are so important and many of them are not in her classes and she's sad about that too.
Like you mentioned after a couple weeks she will settle in and make new friends and also will have time for her old friends outside of school... That's so important. In the meantime, we just worry don't we?
I'm almost shaking in my boots about parenting a girl this age---it just seems much more intense than raising my son who is now in college and doing his thing.
We are parents, and this is such an important job. Let's give it everything we have.
Love,
Joanna

Yikes! I too only had 500-600 people at my HS...my graduating class was 130 or so.
After school activities are the way to go. There are usually more options for those in high school than in jr. high (middle, whatever they call it these days), so I'd encourage her and her friends to try to find something they can do together like that. Does she have your creativity? Maybe yearbook committee...great way to make friends (and they were always a well liked group in my school...HA HA everyone wanted to be seen in the best light).
Geoff's youngest started kindergarten last week. We were a bit worried about her being shy and all, but she is having a good time. Yesterday was her first full day of school (they ease the little ones into this whole new experience). Geoff talked to her on the phone to see how it was and all he got out of her was "Cool"! Probably because she got to eat in the cafeteria, and they were going to have playground time at recess. Ah to be that young again! Just skip the jr. high years for me, thank you very much.
Now I'm off to that never ending thing called work.
