Elaine Gottschall - the SCDiet
Elaine Gottschall, who founded Breaking the Vicious Cycle died September 5th 2005. I would have liked to thank her for working so hard to help others in person . By writing her book and bringing the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to so many that have bowel disorders has helped thousands of people to regained their health. Her book was and is an important part of my recovery.
Thanks Elaine
Matthew

We've lost a great ally in the campaign for GI health. I understand that she was working on another book which was intended to review the scientific research on the connection between intestinal disorders, behavior and neurological problems, as well as many autoimmune disorders. That book would have undoubtedly been of great interest to us.
I don't know her age, but since she received her degree in 1973, I'm guessing that she was only about 54 years old.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I am saddened to learn that Elaine Gottschall has died. She has no doubt helped many people regain their health and with her book and web site I am sure she will continue to be an inspiration and help in many people's lives.
I, like Joanna, have never read her book, but this occasion is a reminder to do so; I have always wanted to give my mother a copy of it - it has been translated into Danish and probably many other languages as well.
I am very sorry, Matthew - Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Love,
Karen

I can't find the full obituary but she looks to be in her 80's or so.
"Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." -- Buddha
I could not find any exact dates but on one of the SCD sites it says she was in her mid 80's and was in a nursing home or hospice being treated for cancer. Her two daughters that were the main reason in finding the treatment are continuing her work. It is my understanding that she did not have bowel problems herself.

Hi All!
So sorry to hear this news. She was definitely a visionary and pioneer, and many have benefitted from her work. The discussions of physiology and basic science in her book are among the best I have read. She will be missed. Thanks for letting us know, Matthew.
Love,
Polly
