Hi All,

I wonder how many of us now recognize possible symptoms of gluten-sensitivity that we may have had as a child. They may not have seemed abnormal at the time, but symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, failure to thrive, (slow growth), shortness of stature, (compared with other kids), low body weight, (compared with other kids), an ever-present pot belly, headaches, migraines, frequent nausea, etc., can all be symptoms of gluten-sensitivity, whether only one or several symptoms are present.

Many of us can now see that one or both of our parents may have had symptoms that suggest that they might have been sensitive to gluten, though most of them were never diagnosed.

Tex,

I answered No, but - my mother had symptoms that suggest she may have been sensitive to gluten. AND I have cousins on both sides of my family (distant and closer), with Crohn's, colitis, and several concerning AI issues. Since I have the double DQ2 heritage, I guess that makes sense... and is probably why I now see gluten sensitivity everywhere I look. (Really, everywhere - took my dog off grains when we first adopted him from the shelter, and all kinds of skin and behavior issues calmed right down.)

Maybe we can suggest from time to time that newer members might want to browse and participate in polls such as these? Many people find them on their own, I'm sure. We are collecting some very interesting information, and I hope it really helps folks along the way.

It has struck me that many people introduce themselves by saying they've had GI issues for years. It will be interesting to note what *other* (non-GI) issues also turn out to implicate gluten sensitivity.

You may need to clear the cookies in your browser, (IOW, the system might be using a corrupt cookie). I definitely had symptoms, but went undiagnosed. My weight and stature were normal, but I had constant digestive problems from a young age, numerous ear infections, and a persistent problem w/ bed wetting among other symptoms--all of which I've seen noted as being associated w/ gluten and even other food intolerances/allergies. I'm not officially celiac--at least in terms of testing positive on a celiac blood panel--but I have tested as intolerant via IgG testing and I'm positive I react to gluten through trial and error using elimination diets. No gluten and dairy = no problems for me w/ ulcerative colitis. Unfortunately, the damage is already done from years of not knowing to avoid certain foods and I'm stuck w/ UC and other inflammatory issues.

This is a good poll, Wayne. Thanks for putting it up. I'm interested to see the results.

Interesting poll, Tex.

I´ve answered the first option, as I had symptoms, though I was never diagnosed.

But some members of my family have/had them too... And were never diagnosed...

Hi Tessa,

The first option applies to me, also. I may have had some blood relatives who had symptoms, but I was never aware of them. I didn't even recognize my own childhood symptoms, until just a few years ago. One of my father's aunts was diagnosed with celiac disease, many years ago, but she was not a blood relative.

Though I do not write so often, I use to visit the forum and read the posts.

We have a similar experience. I had symptoms since childhood too, but it was not until some years ago that we knew

With regard to my relatives, for instance my father... Well he even doesn´t want to admit when he has a cold...

Thank you for asking. I am feeling well - more or less - and I am having a very busy time. We started an association and we are doing a hard work, but it´s worth the time and effort.

Plus many other extra activities...
