Hi all,
The three mega shelters have dropped in population to less that a third of the original totals to the point that it may be possible to close the Astrodome shelter soon.
I think those few who have to move to the other facitilities will find them much more convenient and new. This will put them much closer to where all the special services they need are, plus medical facitilities that still operate there.
As you can well imagine, the weary volunteer crews dropped significantly on Tuesday morning since people were having to return to work. About the only thing this impacted was breakfast which ran a little behind.
Hou Indep School District has been hiring La. teachers, and a few closed schools were opened back up for the anticipated influx of new students. We saw some of them boarding school buses on the local news today and they actually looked excited to be going to school. Many anticipated making some new friends.
Bill Cosby was in town to visit with the people who remained. I wonder if he did the Art Linkletter bit with the kids who were still there?
Speaking of kids, they had the neatest playgrounds set up around the Dome and inside the other shelters.
Welp, besides my cousin who was a resident of N.O., an employee at my sis's medical office has a house or apt full of relatives as she's from N.O. Apparently, they lost everything, so my sis thinks her son who lived there could wear some of the new men's clothing that my dad had that we'd planned to give to someone a while back. There's not much left of his, and I'll have to check out my uncle's old closet to see if there's anything left in there that would be good to donate. Her place is close to Mom's church, so they had a good feed over there Sunday at lunch. Wow, I can't imagine what it would be like to have to cook for so many people in a small house or apartment.
Pretty sure they'll be much work available in N.O. before too long. I'm hearing lots of La. people say they've already gotten jobs, so that's a good sign. Guess lots depends on the skills one already has, and apparently, various employers are doing humanitarian hiring as well.
This country really amazes me sometimes!

Did you happen to hear that one of the Congresswomen in Ga., McKinney, I think, said that the Astrodome reminded her of a "concentration camp?" Welp, the people actually staying there didn't want to leave on the two big cruise ships that were hired to board them more comfortably -- not a single person wanted to use those, if you can believe that. Today, people were actually returning to the Dome so the numbers went back up a little.
What about that C. Dion singer woman, and the rapper guy? What planet have these people been living on, anyway?!!
Anyway, this congresswoman from Ga. needs a little confrontation if you know anyone in her district over there. Maybe they'd be willing to call and let her know that they know for a fact that she's lying. Better yet, she should be confronted on the local news and in the editorial pages.
Hope the concert to raise more money did well, but it was soo boring I didn't watch it.
One thing I learned from listening to the La. station broadcasting here was that the lady in charge of the nursing home where that sheriff's mother drowned had had local officials offer to rescue them, but that the lady in charge had decided to just stay there.
She drowned with them, of course. Did you hear this on the other news outlets?? I didn't even hear it on a Houston station, but maybe it's early yet.
Having lived through these things and also worked with three government agencies, I prefer to have the local folks take charge of things. Feds have their place, but mostly, they just get in the way in the early stages, and federal goverment is so encumbered with buracracy. Most common expression I heard while working with them was, .."you can't cause somebody might..." That's why you could never get anything done. In the private sector, and especially in churches, things can get done almost immediately when there's a need. Mom's beauty shop owner and his wife have been volunteering down at either the convention center or the Dome, and he said that the church had 2000 volunteers working there, and that's just one church. It's the volunteers who've made things very pleasant for people in very trying circumstances.
Had something else to report but sleepies have come on fast, and whatever it was has slipped my mind.

It appears that the body count is much less than anticipated. Think it was Jefferson Parrish sheriff who reported that they'd had 20 deaths, and only 2 were storm related. The others were in hospices and nursing homes, and died for the reasons they were where they were.
Btw, did you know that during T.S.Allison's flooding in 2001, Houston had 50,000 houses under water? What a mess!
