new granddaughter

Post by Martha »

I have a new granddaughter, born on August 23, which was our 36th anniversary. What a nice anniversary present. We are rejoicing in this new addition to our family.

Her name is Abigail Elizabeth, 7 lbs. 7 oz. She is the smallest of the four children by almost two pounds. She was born at 4 a.m., and they had a home birth, so we got to be there. That was pretty neat.

Love,
Martha

Martha,

What a joyful day! Thanks for sharing the awesome news. That's a big girl, for a littlest girl - at least in our family!

Congratulations and best wishes to all your generations for many years of joy, health and happiness,

Congratulations what wonderful news. I hope mother and baby are doing well. I was 9lbs myself and when I had my daughter and she was only 7lbs 6oz I was surprised but then I had my son who was 9lbs 4oz. Then I had wished he was small like my daughter as it was a difficult delivery. They actually believe that since the delivery and shock I went into afterwards are what most likely triggered my celiac disease.

But I will take the celiac disease any day since I have such a beautiful and wonderful 5 year old son.

Again congrat's and enjoy!!!

Congratulations Martha! I love those babies and can't wait to get my hands on one. My granddaughter got married in June and can't wait for a baby, so hopefully we'll have one within the next year.

Enjoy,
Nancy

Unfortunately, right from birth, Abigail just couldn't seem to wake up and nurse. They tried feeding her with a syringe, but she still didn't take much milk. Finally on Friday night they took her to the ER, where she was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. She is still there, with a feeding tube and oxygen. I haven't seen her, but my husband saw her last night and says that she looks better. My son said that she took a full bottle of breast milk earlier, so that is great. She still doesn't nurse well.

They have done a whole raft of test, including chromosome tests for Down Syndrome, but the results aren't back yet. We are all pretty stressed and scared.

Abigail's 21-month-old brother is staying with us, and the older girls are with their other grandparents, who have a pool. They also used to live with those grandparents before their mom married my son, so they are very comfortable there. I'm so glad that we are all close and can help out.

Please send prayers and good wishes Abigail's way. She is a precious little girl.

Love,
Martha

Dear Martha,

So very sorry to hear about your news - can only imagine how stressful it is for all of you. It sounds encouraging that she was able to drink a full bottle. I'm keeping fingers and toes crossed that all will end well, and will send lots of positive thoughts to Abigail, to you and to your family.

Love,
Kari

Martha,

How heartbreaking to watch a little newborn struggle to eat. My daughter's first child didn't want to nurse and she was very frustrated. She finally began using an artificial nipple and he was able to latch onto it very well. It was slower, but he eventually learned how to nurse directly from her. A teacher's newborn at my school had the same problem, and I told him about the artificial nipple. He said it solved the problem.

If she's drinking from a bottle, then an artificial nipple might do the trick. I think my daughter bought it at Babies R Us. It's similar to baby bottle nipple, but it has a circle of flat plastic at the base of the nipple to help it stick to the breast.

Hopefully learning how to suck is the only issue she has and can easily be corrected.

Keep us posted. I'll keep her in my prayers.

Love,
Gloria

I will pray, too, Martha. I hope that she is perfectly fine, and will figure out what nursing is all about!
