Bariatric Surgery Update
I just wanted to provide an update on how I am doing after my vertical sleeve procedure. Before surgery I was taking 6 Apriso ER's, 4 Asacol HD's and 6 imodium AD per day and still had runny poop 4-6 times a day. Since my surgery on the 18th of July, I have cut down my medication to 2 Apriso's and 2 imodium AD's per day. Now I poop once a day and it's only runny perhaps once a week otherwise it's a firm one piece turd.
I had the surgery on a monday, was home by tuesday and was back to work the following monday. I've had no complications no adverse side effects and the added bonus of going from 290 lbs to 235 lbs in a month and a half. Would I recommend this to all who suffer MC? Absolutely not! But if you are over weight and suffering from MC, I would definitely consider this an option.
As I said in an earlier post, The vertical sleeve procedure has almost zero complications and virtually no side effects. When compared to the lap band and bypass (which many people have problems with) I don't see why anyone would choose anything else when considering Bariatric Surgery.
When 3 months of the gluten free diet and a dozen different combinations of medication gave no relief for my MC, my GI suggested this as a last resort. I for one, am absolutely ecstatic about the results I've seen thus far. In my case, it was a 100% success.

Glad to hear your surgery went well. I'm sure you must be feeling tons better from the significant weight loss and better control of MC. Hope this continues for you and you achieve your goal weight without difficulty.

Hi S.A.!
Glad to hear that all went well with your surgery. I might be mistaken, but I believe you might be the first member here to use this surgery to control MC. We will be very interested to follow your course and hear regular progress reports. And that's great news that your symptoms have significantly improved. Thanks for updating us.
To your continued improvement

I'm very happy everything has gone so well for you. Please check in and let us know how you are doing off and on (or more regularly if you'd like). Always happy to hear about new experiences, especially if they are helping.

Thanks everyone! I realize it was a bit unconventional and I almost backed out of it after reading all of the advise here not to do it. But I weighed all my options and felt that even if it didn't help my MC at least I would be healthier with the weight loss. I really haven't grasped why a smaller stomach is affecting my colon the way it has but it seems to have worked very well. I have cut way down on all of my medication but have been scared to stop it all together. I am hoping to get off all the meds but don't want to eliminate them too fast. I'm just going to enjoy the freedom awhile before pushing the envelope any more.
I wonder if it has to do with less food in, less poop out and less irritation making the medication not have to work as hard. That may sound ridicules, I know it's only been a month and it may come back but I have NEVER before had a remission, so this is very encouraging for me.

New Update... GI doc took me off the apriso completely. He has me taking 4 daily Asacol HD's only (no more Amodium AD). For the past two weeks I have been having just 1 bowel movement every OTHER day and it's NEVER soft. My Family Practitioner has completely stopped my cholesterol and blood pressure medicine. So the 4 Asocols are the ONLY meds I'm now taking. BTW... My weight is down to 195 lbs. So that would be a 95 lb weight loss. Our goal is 180 lbs and I'll hopefully be there by christmas.
