What Can We Learn From Our Symptoms?

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Since we tend to have various symptoms, I've been thinking about symptoms, and what they might tell us, (if anything). I wonder, for example, what percentage of us have occasional nausea as a symptom during our MC reactions. It was a somewhat regular problem for me, but some of us rarely, or never, have nausea as part of their reaction pattern.

Also, I wonder if celiac genes play a part in this symptom.

Tex,

I don't remember having nausea (almost ever?) prior to MC, nor even as a primary hurdle in my first MC episode, in 1997. (I felt so awful then, quite honestly - I might have been nauseous and it just didn't rise about the general level of misery.) However, it has been sort of 'flickering' through my life in the past couple of years, even before MC returned with a fury. I actually felt great today (digestively, energy-wise, mood, etc.), but had a moment of vague nausea around mid-day. I don't know whether that's indicative of something I'm eating that I haven't figured out is an intolerance, or it's a coming-and-going symptom during healing. Just a few days ago, I also had gurgling, which is usually a bad sign - but no other symptoms, and it dissipated (and maybe I had stayed up too late the night before?).

I'll be really interested to know what patterns are uncovered. It was giant news to me that battery-acid D was a dairy red-flag - that's held true for me, and I bet some of the other patterns that are revealed will be useful to many of us in finding out path to healing.

Love,
Sara

I never had nausea. It always felt so weird to have D without feeling bad. I didn't have cramps, either, although now that I look back, I can recognize that my stomach roiled around a lot, but it didn't hurt.

FWIW, I have a theory that nausea is associated with the celiac genes, but not with the genes that predispose to microscopic colitis, (IOW, not associated with the genes that predispose to non-celiac gluten-sensitivity). The jury is still out, of course, but so far, the poll results seem to match my theory.

No nausea for me but painful stomach cramps and lots of noises when flairing (and no celiac gene).

According to my Enterolab results I don't have genes predisposing to celiac sprue. I have two copies of a gene that predisposes to gluten sensitivity so I voted accordingly. Nausea was a big problem for me.

I had the same experience as Martha. Nothing but bloating, movement in there but no pain, and D.

I have a celiac gene.

Interesting survey - nausea was definitely a symptom for me - and I have 2 celiac genes. Thanks for starting this survey, it reminds me that I have not felt nauseous in a loooong time. One more symptom that seems to have magically vanished after going gluten free - yeah!!!

I never had nausea ... just bloating and lots of cramping. Still do have the cramping and bloating, but the D is very much better after going GF and 90% DF ... I did have some cheese sprinkles yesterday, but I was okay.

I'm still working on reasons for the bloating and cramping. And, this Hiatal Hernia is the pits! Although, Tex, I have been doing the standing-on-toes and lowering-down-on heels exercise. Thanks for the tip.

I think maybe the HH is partly the reason for the bloating.

I don't know if I have the celiac gene or not - but there are times when the cramping hurts so much it does make me nauseous. Plus the bloating and the roiling stomach are definitely are a part of my life.
