Linda,

I don't know if you are aware of this, but dental problems are associated with long-term gluten-sensitivity. IOW, a lifelong gluten issue weakens tooth enamel, resulting in seemingly endless dental problems. I had the same experience that you did - somewhere between 5 and 10 years before my MC symptoms developed, my teeth suddenly began to develop numerous cavities, cracks, splits, etc. Prior to that, they had always been better than average, and I very rarely had a cavity. At the time, I didn't have the foggiest idea what was going on - now, of course, I recognize the connection. As the old saying goes, "Ve get too soon oldt, undt too late schmart".

I had the same dental problems crop up starting before the colitis and then they got worse. I had a lot of dental work done including two implants. Work that was supposed to take 6 mos took over three years because of all kinds of problems cropping up. We (dentist, endodontist, family doc, and I) all decided to take the work slowly making sure no one procedure caused me any problems with either infection or colitis flares.

You see ads on tv about getting all your teeth redone in one visit! Doing anything that radical is a recipe for disaster for anyone with an autoimmune illness. By taking one tooth at a time.. we always knew what medication might have caused a problem if there was one... and we made sure healing was complete at each step before even scheduling the next tooth.

GrannyH,

That's a heck of a note that you had a relapse. It sounds as though the treatment was probably worse than whatever issue the antibiotic was used to treat. It's a shame that the medical/pharmaceutical/insurance industries can't get all their ducks in a row. Imagine how smoothly medical issues could be resolved, if every treatment worked the way it was intended to work.

Tex,
The problem is that I didn't get Cipro. The doctors are almost forced to prescribe generics for folks on Medicare. Make that CHEAP generics. If I need an antibiotic again will ask for Cipro.. brand name only. But even with that some of the drug manufacturers are taking short cuts and even the brand name stuff is made in filthy labs in third world countries.

The problem is that generics only have to match the active ingredient - everything else is arbitrary, and that's where most of our problems arise.
