started gluten free....can almond milk gve you diarreah?

Post by blackcatjordie »

Hi all! I have MC and I started gluten free on Sunday. On tues I decided to do dairy free also and subbed in almond milk. Yesterday I had two glasses of vanilla almond milk and i got a little bit of diarreah last night. I I really haven't had much diarreah since I am now on pepto. Has anyone else noticed this? How about rice milk?

It really depends on the ingredients, which vary by brand.

Two cups might just be a lot of something new, to a system that's under the weather. I would double-check that your almond milk does not contain any of the most likely irritants (soy?) as a first step. Some of us don't tolerate the ingredients that are used to stabilize almond milk (xanthan gum, tapioca, etc.) You can rule out whether it's almond milk itself, or the other ingredients, by making your own - it's really easy. And if you tolerate it, you can look for a brand of almond milk that has fewer 'other' ingredients.

I use So Delicious brand coconut milk... and sometimes hemp milk.

Good luck,
Sara

Unless someone has changed their formulation, the last time I checked, Silk was the only brand of Almond Milk without soy.

There are a couple of other brands now - not sure whether they're new products, or a changed formulation. We were using Pacific brand, and I've seen one other. I think the Almond Dream brand also has a soy-free, unsweetened product - for some reason I didn't find that as often on store shelves as the others.

I only buy the unsweetened/unflavored varieties, so it's possible you have to check the labeled ingredients for each flavor. Yikes!

Tex, on your recommendation we tried hemp milk - thanks! It's been great in smoothies particularly.

Love,
Sara

Carrageenan is an ingredient found in most Pacific brand milks and also in Almond Dream. Polly and I both react to carrageenan, though I don't think most others here do.

As Sara mentioned, almond milk is pretty easy to prepare and is delicious. Here are instructions and tips on straining it: http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12153

I buy a 3 lb. bag of almonds at Sam's Club for $10.29. Costco also sells a 3 lb. bag for $9.79 Each bag makes four 64 oz. containers of almond milk using the recipe above.

I've been using Silk almond milk for baking and to have on hand when I run out of homemade almond milk.

Homemade rice milk is cheap and also pretty easy to make. Here are instructions on how to make it:

I believe I react to Carrageenan. I identified it as a problem for me about 3 years ago, long before I got my MC diagnosis. But I have to admit I wasn't systematic about testing it and it's possible I was reacting to dairy instead. Now that I'm starting to get my diet under control and I'm doing more systematic testing, I should be able to figure out for certain.
