Hi everyone - just wanted to say hello and give an update. Camryn is now 5 1/2 and doing great! She started Kindergarten a few weeks ago. Her teacher wasn't very understanding about the gluten free diet at first calling it a "problem" and "inconvenient", but she seems to be more understanding now. I bought a book for her called "Adam's Gluten Free Surprise" and I think that helped. It showed her that she has a medical condition and that the diet is not something that we just choose to follow. Anyhow, she is doing great. I had another baby back in April. Her name is Kayla. She is starting out just like her big sister. She has a milk and soy protein allergy (just like Camryn did at her age). Hopefully we can avoid LC with her....but we'll see.

I hope everyone is doing well. Let me know if anyone else has joined who has a child with this condition!

Welcome back! It's great to hear that Camryn is doing great on the GF diet. Is she also DF and SF, meaning she didn't outgrow the allergy of infancy? I haven't seen new postings about children here in a while, but I suppose few kids get colonoscopies with biopsies, even when the symptoms warrant it. When my son started elementary school, I was amazed at how often they celebrate birthdays with cupcakes in the classroom. He's not GF (yet), but I can only imagine how hard it is for kids with food intolerances. We are only banned from bringing in peanut products from home.

Hi Laura,

It's nice to see an update. I've been wondering how Camryn is doing these days, and it's great to see that she's doing so well. I sure hope that her teachers won't be an obstacle in her path. Hopefully, they'll learn to "get with the program", because Camryn surely won't be the only student to ever turn up in their classes with those issues.

Congratulations on your newest addition to your family. I'm sorry to hear that she also has allergies, but your experience should certainly help to make her life much easier, as she learns to deal with those issues.

After a few days, I believe I'll move this thread to the "Member Success" forum, so that it will be easier to find by any prospective members who might be scanning the board looking for hope for their babies or young children, with these issues.

Thanks for posting a very inspiring update. And thank you for your kind offer to help any new member who has a child with these issues. We'll surely keep you and Camryn in mind.

Thanks - yes, I would definitely like to share our success with any other parents of children with microscopic colitis. Zizzle - to answer your question - Camryn did outgrow her dairy and soy protein allergies. She had no allergies from age 1 to 2, but then developed LC at age 2 (and she went gluten free). Hopefully Kayla will also outgrow the milk and soy protein allergy. Camryn was also allergic to chocolate and citrus, but has also outgrown those allergies.

Good to hear Camryn is doing so well. I'm not sure if my son has MC or celiac - we never did biopsies but I started him GF/DF and corn free at age 9. I am not surprised by the problems you have had with the school. My son went GF in 3rd grade and school was the hardest place to get support. His teachers were supportive but the school food service department was another story. Legally they had to offer him some GF foods if he chose to eat in the cafeteria but it was so unappetizing to a 9 year old (boiled eggs, plain chicken, plain vegetables etc) that he never utilized it.

So sorry to hear that Kayla is now having food issues as well, but at least you know how to handle it.

The school DD#1's children attend doesn't permit treats for birthday celebrations, presumably to avoid the allergy situation. DD is a room mother and they have to be extremely careful providing treats for holidays.
