Fires in Texas

The bad news is, the winds are predicted to pick up again tomorrow, with a new norther, so the fire risk will shoot up again. And sometime next week, the low in the Gulf, south of us, will bring us another round of wind, without any rain, as it develops, and moves into Mexico.

The trouble with all the tropical events this year, is that they bring us wind, and more fires, but no rain to provide any long-term improvement. So far this year, over 3.6 million acres in Texas have burned. To put that in perspective, that's over 5,625 square miles - larger than the entire state of Connecticut. And there doesn't seem to be any indication that this trend will change, in the foreseeable future.

Thanks for thinking of me Tex. Yes, Robin and I were in the mountains of New Mexico when the fires broke out. Being that far away we knew it wouldn't do any good to hurry home. The fires got within 10 miles of our house but no closer. We live just north of Bastrop. Since we've been home (just over a week) when the wind blows from the south our air is full of ash and dust from the burn area. Right now there are still flares due primarily to tree roots. We could sure use a good rain but doesn't look like any if forthcoming.

I'll try to post about my summer, which was one of the best yet. I'm doing very well and have been successful in adding fiber back into my diet. I've gotten a little weight off. I'll have blood work done in a couple of weeks so it will be interesting to see what my cholesteral does.

Hi Jan,

Welcome back. 10 miles is plenty close for a fire that size - I'm glad that it stayed far enough away. I suspected that it was still burning, because once once in a while last week, I could still smell a little smoke, but it's possible that could have been from one of the other fires around here that's still smoldering.
