joined "Curves" for women
Thought I'd share this cause were excited about it.
My daughter and I joined Curves a few weeks ago. Before joinging we tried a couple jazzersize classes which were to bouncy for us. We also checked out a local gym with free weights and nautilus equipment which I really liked but it bored her so we settled on Curves. I have lost quite a bit of weight in the last year and would like to firm up and Lannie wants to lose some weight so our goal is to workout 3 times a week together which isn't hard to manage. Good mother/daughter bonding time.
Anyone familiar with Curves? I know lot's of women who are members that like it. Price is not bad either, 45.00/mo. for us both. Interesting also, they have a prayer/meditation room and a room with light boxes.
Moremuscle Karen, you would probably get a good chuckle at the workout system set up at this club. It's actually kind of funny watching the way it works. Primarily, most of the women I've seen there so far are 40 years and up. We were working out next to an energenic 72 year old the other day! It's a very low impact workout but were seeing results already and I'm sleeping better now.
Love,
Joanna

I was at a "Curves" once many years ago. It is a lot different from the usual exercise. It's rather neat though for those who aren't able or just don't want the strenuous/aerobic exercises, and I have heard more than one person say it took off inches and firmed them up.
My Mom is 82 and has osteoarthritus and Ankylosing Spondylitis. She just can't do a lot of exercising. I wonder if Curves would be good for her? There is one nearby where we will be living in Florida and I think I could get her to try it if I did. Do you think it might be too much for her - anybody?
Love, Shirley

Hi Shirley,
That's a bummer about your Mom and I'm not sure about your her being able to handle the workout- I really doubt it.....but, YOU sure could do it! I think you would like it and now that your watching your diet my hunch is that your going to lose some weight so it's a perfect time to add some exercise to your life.
Wouldn't you rather be doing this ?
Than following Bill around the golf course in the hot sun?
Memberships are usable at all Curves, in other words if you joined, you could work out in FLA during the winter and PA in the summers. Do you have one near you in PA? If so, try to check it out before you leave for the sunny south.

Joanna

One of my fairly flat-chested friends boasted that after a month at Curves she lost 1" from her waist and gained 1/2 inch on her chest!
I've thought about something like that, but just find it so hard to find the time and energy to do all I want to do. Geoff and I are going to discipline ourselves to go walking at least. I need to get more physically fit before I have surgery this winter.
As for your mom, shirley, Maybe not the whole workout, but I bet there are some aspects of it that would be good for her. Make sure to check it out with her doc or a geriatric specialist first, but strength is something that can only improve her quality of life. (That goes for any of us).

Yeah, since I posted that I went to their "site" and the workouts have changed a LOT since I went that one time - LOL. I know Mom couldn't do the whole circut but maybe if I work with her over the winter she might be able to handle it (or most of it by Spring). I REALLY want to improve her "quality of life" and improve the way she feels. Keep good thoughts that I will "uplift" her instead of letting her drag me down - LOL.
Yes, Joanna, I already know that there is a Curves about 20 minutes from here (there is nothing actually close to here - LOL). The one in Florida is about 5 minutes away. By the way, I have lost 6 lbs total and I feel better already. It's OK if it comes off slow as long as it keeps coming off!!!
Thanks Everyone,
Shirley

Good for you Joanna!
I never seem to stick with the *groups* thing. I haven't tried Curves though. I wish you all the luck in the world. Exercise is good for the mind and body! Let us know how you're doing - there is a Curves right up the road from me. I might check it out.
I agree, what a neat way to spend with your daughter!
Love and hugz,
Margie

I think I just might investigate this Curves thing. I have one very close by but just don't have a lot of time and groups have not always been my thing. However, I am going to check their site and make a decision. I need some time for me and this just might be it. Weight is not the problem but being old I want to firm up a bit. I can wave without underarm fat waving back.
Love, Maggie

Hi Ladies,
I'd encourage you all to check into it- time was a factor for me too, but, this workout plus stretching you can do in 35 minutes. If your not in a rush you can workout longer.
Off to the flower shop- have a good day all.
Love,
Joanna

Lannie and Joanna!
Good for you two!
You are an inspiration. I am still running 3 miles every other day, but I've slacked off on the weights (sigh) and I still haven't been able to get into Pliates. You have given me a kick in the butt - I will try to do better.
Thanks.
Love,
Polly

Hi Joanna and Lannie,
I haven't been on the board for "ages" but just had a few moments before bedtime and saw your post -
Congratulations on taking action - you continue to inspire and amaze us with all you are and do. It is wonderful news and no, I do not laugh at anyone who decides to exercise; I think all methods and systems can be rewarding as long as they work for the individual who chooses it/them.
You GO GIRLS!!
Love,
Karen

Hi Polly, Karen and all....
Gracious, was just thinking back 18 months ago about how awful I felt at the time of my DX. Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed that I could regain my health, live without constant muscle & joint pain plus chronic D, much less feel well enough to join a gym. I had my doubts at times, it's a long bumpy road so it's easy to get depressed and loose motivation. Think I've arrived at a good place.
Just want to let you all know how special each of you are to me and I appreciate your support so much. Every single one of you play an invaluable role in my recovery on a daily basis- YOU are my inspiration.
Love,
Joanna

Joanna, you have inspired me. I think there is a Curves just over in Wilsonville about 5 minutes from where I live. I will check it out. I have been feeling a bit flabby lately. Maybe they could work something around my hips. I don't want anymore pain there, thank you very much, but my belly and arms could use some firming up.
Since so many of us seem enthused about Curves, maybe we could get a group discount?
Love,
Sally

Right on Sally!
Group discount, that's funny. LOL That's great you have a Curves so close to you - check it out! You have nothing to lose, but flab of course and I'm certain you would see results quickly like we have.
Go girl!
