Add me to the list of coconut oil users. I always had oily skin and used Oil of Olay with sunscreen for years. When I first started using coconut oil (a couple of years ago) it felt "heavy" but I've gotten used to it and now love it! I apply it immediately after my bath so it melts pretty quickly
I do have less wrinkles than many my age which I think is part naturally oily skin and part what I'm using.

So far as lip balm, I was given a gift of EOS lip balm and the packaging states GF & SF free. Comes in many flavors and is not thick and oily and is in an sphere shaped container and quite easy to carry along. Can be found in Rite Aid and CVS drug stores and many more places. Here is a link for their products. Have not investigated the rest of their products yet. Highly recommend it.

Well, that certainly would be easier to tuck into a purse or pocket than the giant jar of coconut oil I'm using  Thanks, Maggie - I'll keep an eye out for that EOS line.

Inspired by this thread, I tried coconut oil as a mascara-remover last night - I liked it!

Love,

I've noticed my complexion actually looking better since I've been on the CC diet. I'm eating more salmon and fish then ever in the past and I think it is helping my complexion!

Thanks for the tip on the EOS lip balm Maggie. They look cute. I'll look for those too.

The website says it has Vitamin E in it. I remember Gabes saying that she avoids Vit E oil but I can't remember what it is about Vit E that can be a problem. Gabes, is it the processing of Vit E oil or where it comes from?

All the positive comments about coconut oil have made me want to try some. What do I need to look for? Any particular brands better than others, or is it all the same? Is it a solid like shortening or a liquid like olive oil? Having never used it I'm not sure what to look for. Thanks!

Katie, I got a big tub from http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com ... ut-oil.php. I was in their area and picked it up. It has a coconut smell and melts at 76 degrees. Virgin coconut oil is recommended http://www.live-the-organic-life.com/vi ... t-oil.html

Katie,
You can get coconut oil just about anywhere now. Spectrum Naturals/Hain makes a widely sold one. Make sure you buy a filtered one for skin care, otherwise you'll end up with little coconut chunks on your skin - but you can eat them. It somes in a glass jar, smaller than a mason jar. It is solid like shortening most of the time, but it melts quickly on your skin (or in a frying pan - it's great for sauteeing).

Ladies,
I used coconut oil on my skin the other day and I admit, I really like it! It does impart a glow, but doesn't look greasy, and it did not cause pimples. Amazing! Does the caprylic or lauric acid in coconuts have any age defying properties? I hope so!

Well, it shows we are all still learning when we keep pulling these older threads into now time. First off, most of you probably use this site, but thought I'd share it in case some don't know about it:
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/?nothanks=1
I think you can copy and paste it. The "nothanks" relates to donation requests they hit you with. This site rates safety in about every cosmetic product you can think of. Some that you've felt were pretty safe and good brands that you pay big bucks for rate very low.

Here is a company I really like: www.realpurity.com Their site lists ingredients and most products have samples available for $1 to $2.50. That way you can try it to see if it works, check colors, etc. I have a problem with scents in addition to needing GF, SF, DF, so that really limits me. I like their foundation, mascara is great and rates well on EWG (environmental working group), although I don't love the case it comes in--can't have everything.

Chapstick, again, I like unscented, Badger is good. Unfortunately I've not found any chapstick that qualifies that has SPF in it. I get the Badger on the vitacost site--they have the best prices I've found, have a lot of GF food products, and if you can cobble together a $49 order shipping is free. I found out by calling Dr. Bronner re their "naked" lip balm that the Vit E or tocoporol listed is from soy, so rule that out.

I got some samples of products made by Person & Covey from my dermatologist. www.personcovey.com I love their shampoo, and if you buy 3 products on line you get free shipping and no tax unless you live in CA. Otherwise, drug stores might carry it, or Wal-Mart will order it through their pharmacy, usually takes a day or two to arrive.

I have found that the various mineral cosmetics might not be as good for older skin as for younger. Think filling in wrinkles and emphasizing them--no bueno!

I've done a lot of calling to various company's 800#s to ask about unclear ingredient lists, to make sure they don't have any hidden no-nos for me. Most are very helpful.

Happy shopping, all! Beverly

I have found a lip gloss from Neutrogena that is great as gloss and lip balm both. I have it in the shimmer and have never had any problems with it. It heals great in the winter. Its about $6 but lasts a long time!

I have always loved Neutrogena, some products more than others - will check this out. Beverly, I had forgotten about the EWG, and my new mascara isn't so great by their excellent methods of figuring these things out. I'm going to look into the products you mentioned, and thank you!
