I have challenged, and will probably continue to challenge everything except gluten and soy, and probably dairy. I challenged soy once... big mistake. Casein causes the same damage as gluten, and I am concerned that I might be asymptomatic to it again and think I am not causing damage when I am.

My reasoning is that since I have knocked out a bunch of stuff, i.e., because of soy I don't eat legumes; because of rice and corn I don't eat grains, etc., that I may eventually be able to add back things. For example, I found out that I can actually eat potato chips and tomato sauce (nightshade family) without gut or joint trouble. This tells me that I can add them back into my diet as an occasional thing. It gives me a little more variety. I am going to try sweet potatoes next. I would be delighted if I could eat sweet potatoes, again as an occasional thing. I tried eggs, and though I have high hopes that I can eventually eat them again as an occasional thing, according to the ominous gurgling in my gut, that time has not yet arrived.

I think some of us get into trouble because we think we can eat something, so we eat it constantly.

I think you're right on that, Marliss-when I found I didn't react to oats I think I ate oatmeal too much and then I did seem to react. So now I've removed it. I do hope I can add it back at least on a "now and then" basis. I'd also like to add back eggs if I can.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm not going to intentionally challenge gluten--I'll wait until that accidental glutening that is bound to happen. :???: I don't want to derail the progress I've made and am still making. Norman came to visit me this morning!

I agree with your approach Marliss - I'm trying things that are not gluten and dairy to gage my reaction and am finding that as time passes, more of the testing turns out well. Somehow I've managed to convince myself that as I heal, all but gluten and dairy will be back in my diet. Everything in moderation is the key, including the size of the meals. I tried tomatoes yesterday, and noticed some gurgling and softer stools, so they will be back on hold for now :(.

After taking more than 10 years to recover I would not even thing of challening gluten. I have tried soy with little success and can finally eat a salad but not to excess.

Karen, my first test with Enterolab tested just gluten and casein, fecal fat, (and a double gene for gluten intolerance). I tested really high (510) with the gluten and 30+ with the casein. I quit gluten and found remission within a few weeks. I recently retested (a year later) and my gluten is much better but I tested still quite positive for casein, soy, and eggs (fecal fat is much better). I haven't quit those yet but am watching things closely. I've had a month of not feeling great and wondering if there might not be another issue surfacing.

As you may know, sweet potatoes are not in the nightshade family - I am not trying to rush you to re-try them, if you have had a previous bad experience... But if your planning is based around the nighshades, they're a whole 'nother beast :grin:

Plus, they're orange!

I can't do sweet or regular potatoes. A few others here can't tolerate sweet potatoes, either. I've even tried the baby food version - no go.

Marliss,

It's interesting that you can't eat potatoes, but you are able to eat some potato chips. I really miss being able to grab them for a snack; perhaps I should try a few to see if I can tolerate potatoes in that form.

I know, Sara, though I tend to lump all potatoes together. I probably should have said that the sweet potatoes are more of an allergic reaction (and my granuloma annulare doesn't like them for some reason). Good to hear from you--I hope your short absence from the forum was for a delightful reason and not because you were sick.

Hope the potato chips do well for you, Gloria! I was especially pleased because it was right before my period when I have sore knees (at least I used to) any way.

Clearly if the body says "no sweet potatoes" - who am I to argue! It is interesting that we have members who tolerate neither, as well as members who tolerate one or the other, but not both... I am looking forward to MRT! Both seem 'OK' for me - meaning, neither is disastrous. Enterolab said that white potatoes were my least reactive food, but I am not sure I should eat them in great quantity, or frequency.

(Marliss, thank you - a friend had a reading of his work and we decided to go, and then I extended my trip so I could see another beloved pal who lives nearby...)
