Nor'easter coming soon to New England

Post by nancyl »

Can you believe it? It's not even November yet and we're suppose to get 12+ inches of snow tonight and we're celebrating my class reunion, hopefully we can make it. We had part one last night at a billiard club, but not everyone was there. There should be more tonight. I have my boots and mittens ready. UGH!!! The leaves are still on the trees and the lawn needs mowing.

This may turn out to be an interesting year, weatherwise.

It is crazy-snowing here. Yesterday I was working outside without my jacket. I heard it wasn't going to accumulate... but it's accumulating! And the wind... YIKES!

Nancy, that should be a real New England style reunion! Down here, folks get quite hysterical over weather we northern gals just laugh at. Sure hope you're laughing your way to the reunion (and at least I'm confident you're a better snow-driver than most folks down in these latitudes!!!).

I know Nancy, we have the same forecast, but I think we are only about 20 miles from each other as the crow flies.

I just spent the last 5 hours putting away all of the summer stuff and swithng the barn around to put the winter stuff where I can get at it. Just to be safe I tested the generator to make sure it is ready. It's these early storms that do a number on the power lines.

Sara,

If you think that some winter drivers in your part of the country are hell on wheels when the weather gets a little bad, you should see what happens way down here when we have an ice storm. Apparently, a lot of drivers think that they can travel at normal speeds, and slow down after they hit a slick stretch.

I wonder whether some drivers don't go *faster* when the roads are especially bad- you know, so they can get home sooner? Interesting tactic...

My husband and I were driving in a total white-out storm in northern NH some years back - and we had to go the long way around, because the beautiful Kancamangas Highway was closed. I asked if he felt comfortable driving in the conditions, and when he said, "what do you mean?" I insisted he pull over and switch seats. If you don't know *why* you might want to worry, you probably don't know *how* to drive the storm! (I called him 'surfer boy' for a while after that - he grew up in beachy Long Island... but he married me anyway.)

We are having heavy wet snow here in northeastern NJ, there wasn't much snow on the roads or grass but driving was terrible. Since it started we have had tree limbs come down in our backyard and now some have fallen in the front yard. The tree limbs are very large and I will have to hire a tree service to remove them. There is a large tree limb blocking my street, laying on top of some power lines, so far our power hasn't gone out.

My dog is petrified of all the noises from falling tree limbs and falling heavy snow.

Everyone stay safe!!!

I remember those Nor'easters when we lived on Long Island .. They were IMPRESSIVE, even to a Minnesotan!!

This storm that the east coast is experiencing now is even going to beat the big Minnesota Halloween Blizzard of 1991 by 2 whole days!!!

But take heart all, out there -- this will likely all melt soon. In Minnesota, in 1991, that big layer of snow that fell that day, lasted thru March -- That one was the beginning of what one could only call a "LOOOOONG miserable winter".

Gayle, I remember that Halloween and that storm. I'm pretty surprised we've missed this storm!

Oooh, I'm not ready for winter and snow yet. I want to enjoy my flowers for a little longer. Please don't send it my way, though it's 33 degrees right now.

DH wants to get a generator installed before winter. We and our daughter lost a lot of food from the outage in the summer. We won't lose food in the winter, but we could freeze our buns off.

I hope you can recover from the storm quickly.

Everything was white this AM. I am never really ready for it, however, Halloween is about the time we see snow here. My mother-in law lives in NYC and said it was white slush, and my sister in PA said it was snowing there yesterday. I was still surprised this morning though! Time to get out the fleece and the down.
Ciao,

Well we got 7" in my part of SE PA and sleet to boot. Heavy power losses and we finally got back power mid-afternoon yesterday after 30 hrs. and still no phone, computer or TV. Made the halloween party though last night at our community center. No electric = no heat since ours is electric. Very heavy frost last night.

Love, Maggie

We got about 12" of heavy wet snow and there's still about 400,000 people without power. We're on day four. Every tree in our yard has broken limbs and I had to also call a tree service, but they are so busy there is no telling when they will get to us. We never lost electricty, but I do not have phone, TV, or internet. I am at my daughter's house in the next town catching up on my emails.

The night of the storm we went to my class reunion. It was crazy, but most of us made it and had a good time. Everyone left early though. It was so bad driving home.

This is very unusual to have a storm of this size or any snow at all for that matter before Halloween. Oh, and Halloween was cancelled until next Saturday night.

I wonder what the rest of the winter will bring.

Hello from CT where I am on day 5 of no power or heat. Luckily, we were able to find a hotel room down in New Haven for two nights, and are now with friends in an area that was basically unaffected. Escaping it all tomorrow to visit our daughter in LA. 2011: relentless blizzards, record breaking rain, earthquake, hurricane, October snow. I'm tired of it all and desperately hoping for a milder winter this time.
