I also have vertical ridges on my finger nails, but my nails have never been brittle. I have been dealing with nail fungus on my left foot for years. It has been getting better lately with a home remedy of soaking in white vinegar. I went to have a laser treatment last Friday, as I read that it can get rid of the fungus. I will post an update when I know if it did the job.

Like Sara and Polly, my general health and energy level are vastly improved since my diet changes. In the late 90's I had started feeling very stiff and achy in my hips, especially in the morning when getting up. Interestingly, 3 of my 5 sisters have had hip replacements, and the other 2 have issues. My hip problems have completely disappeared since changing my diet. I'm extremely encouraged about my health actually improving rather than deteriorating as I'm aging  .

Love,
Kari

FWIW, I used to have brittle nails, with vertical lines/ridges. I don't recall when they improved, but now I could do nail ads.

Hi Lesley,
I hope things start improving for you. I have noticed my nails too, although I have blamed it on the change of seasons and dryness and the fact that I'm still not digesting my food correctly. I have white spots on one nail that I think means something?? Do you have any white spots?

I think white spots indicate a zinc deficiency. Get some zinc lozenges and you can kill 2 birds with one stone...cold avoidance and fingernail health.

Zizzle - *This is a new development for me, and it's commonly found in Lupus.* I have had that for years. I also have pronounced Reynaud's syndrome, also found with Lupus, and a malar rash that comes and goes. But my ANA tests are consistently negative.
What can I tell you? Either it is or it isn't. The treatment is the same.

Lassie,
Zizzle is right. I don't have white spots, but it is usually a zinc deficiency.

Tex, DO please post a pic of your beautiful nails. The picture it evoked in my brain (or what's left of it) had me giggling uncontrollably for some reason.

  OK, I'll try to do that later. My internet connection is down, so I'm trying to minimize my usage, because I'm having to cripple along using either my phone, or an ultra-slow dialup connection.

Hi, everybody!
I have had vertical ridges and splitting nails for a long time, and now that I'm GF/DF I do notice they're better. Ditto the aches & pains. Why are people (and their doctors) so slow to recognize these things are caused by gluten and just eliminate it from their diet? (I'm now suspicious of my long-time "hormonal" migraines, too, which are now gone.)

Tex, waiting with bated breath.

Pat, until this began I was very aware of gluten and celiacs, and, because of my close friend who went gluten free years ago WITHOUT a dx, I have been aware of that too. However, I didn't think I needed to. Until now.

It seems to be, from the number of things we have in common, that gluten, or the handling of the processes by which it is delivered to the general public, is to blame for many of the health problems in the world.

Hi Everyone,

Tex there you go again...What a visual....I cant stop laughing!

I also have the brittle nails, the lines and dryness. It got real bad before I was Dx with MC. I thought it was because I am always washing them and using antibacterial gels. So I am glad to hear that I am not the only person with this problem. However, this is not a cure but it does help a great deal ( I have worked in Dermatology for almost 20 years) and I just recently asked one of the doctors (old school doctor) that I work with what I can do. I have tried everything under the sun, every Rep that came in gave me some story and gave me a sample, NOTHING WORKED! This is what he told me and this is what I have been using and really it has really has gotten a lot better. You ready.....are you sure.... CRISCO! Yup crisco, I have change to coconut oil but its really the same. I use it every morning and night. I also had, what I thought, to be a nail fungus on my big toe. Guess what he told me to do with that one.....you ready, in the morning take a shot glass and fill it with WHITE VINEGAR soak my toe for 20 mins. At night fill the shot glass with BLEACH and soak my toe for 20 mins. Well I did that for 2 weeks and the fungus is gone now! I am hoping it never returns either! I hope you all try it and let me know how it worked for you.

Hoping we all can have healthy beautiful nails like Tex soon! LOL

I have vertical ridges on some of my fingernails too, as well as some pitting on one nail. They aren't brittle, but my nails have always been rather soft.

I'll have to watch and see if the ridges go away.

Speaking of things going away, I've noticed that the age spots on my hands are fading. I looked at my hands a few weeks ago, and wondered why they looked so strange and pale. Then I realized that the ages spots were almost gone. Has anyone else noticed that? I've been gluten free for 1 year, dairy and soy free for 10 months, so the change wasn't quick, but it's real.

Lesley and Robin,

You're in for a real treat, (I hope the anticipation doesn't keep you from sleeping tonight). First, though, I need to get internet service restored to the computer that I use for digital image processing, and then I'll work on that project.

Robin, thanks for the info on toenail treating, 'cause unlike my fingernails, a couple of my toenails look like they've been taken over by aliens. Those puppies have been whimpering and begging for the vinegar/bleach treatment you described, ever since they read about it. Is that straight bleach, or diluted? I'd hate to completely kill the poor devils.

Wow, Robin! I've never heard of that treatment - thanks for sharing. I've got a toe with fungus on the tonail. I'll have to try your method.

Robin, Tex has promised us a picture. I cannot wait!

Also, I have been soaking my feet in a vinegar, epsom salts and water solution. Not really doing much good. Bleach is my enemy. I cannot stand it, so I am reluctant. I will have to wrap the rest of me in glad wrap in order to do it, but I will try if I can get rid of this ugly fungus.
