I am sorry, I cannot say why, but I do not believe that my MC was caused by antibiotics.

I am more for a failure of the inmmune system. But of course, I am no expert.

Love,
Tessa

I think taking antibiotics daily (for acne) from the time I was 14 till I was 21 helped set things up, but the chronic D did not start till I flipped from chronic constipation after my first scope at the age of 43. Then it got worse after I got e. coli in late 2006 (from bagged salad). Nothing was going on (no changes, no illness, no new medication, no new stress, etc.) when all of a sudden the D went off the chart about 18 months ago - it was totally out of the blue. I think the real cause or official beginning or trigger (or whatever) for me was the first scope. I think that clean out ruined me :-( But years of antibiotics probably contributed.

Robbie,

You're probably correct. Some/most of the cleanout solutions used prior to scope exams have been shown to be capable of triggering MC. It least one has been withdrawn from the market. They all need to be withdrawn, but so far, no one has come up with a formulation that can be used in place of them. :sigh:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I'm fairly certain that a natural antibiotic (the brand was a different one than I'd ever used, which the lady at the health food store talked me into, and was also cheaper), Olive Leaf Extract, caused mine, either by a Herxheimer Effect because of some possible fungal/sinus type problems, or just an inferior product that played havoc with me. I'd used it before ( different brand) for sinusus and had NO problem, so feel it was the cause, as immediately had D w/ vomiting that lasted the whole day, but instead of thinking it was that, just thought I'd gotten a virus. Then, if that wasn't enough, after not knowing it was that, and having the same problem about every 5 days for 3 or 4 mos., then getting better, I used the same brand about 6 mos. later........same thing. Then it hit me what had caused it, but was too late this time. I've never been the same. Then to top it all off, I took a parasite cleanse product, and it did the same thing, so have had the D since the 2nd. time I used the product, then the parasite cleanse just topped it off. I've never been the same. If anyone takes Olive Leaf Extract for sinus/fungal problems, please use Seagate brand. There's another good brand, but can't think of it right now. Seagate has a wealth of good natural meds.

Mendy,

Doxycycline wasn't the only culprit in the perfect storm that led me to MC, but it was on my list, too - Polly also lists doxy as a #1 suspect...
