Why The Board Was Down For A While This Morning

Post by tex »

 I still don't know. Apparently it was just a random server glitch. I couldn't find anything wrong with our files, so I called the ISP where the server that hosts this site is located, and suggested that there was a problem with their server. Naturally, none of the admins had showed up for work, yet, so the tech assistant couldn't do much but take notes and assure me that he would pass on the information when one of the admins showed up. Of course, he kept trying to tell me that there was something wrong with the code in our files, but as I told him, it appeared that the basic domain address was missing from that server, and as long as that's the case, there's no way to access the files, so it wouldn't even matter if they did happen to be corrupt. Apparently that was the problem, because I see that the site is up and running again, and they haven't called me back to tell me that I was wrong. LOL.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Love,
Tex

Tex you are correct in your diagnosis of the problem. I ran a trace route from one of the DOD backbones (known routing table) and the route stopped at your host provider in Texas. The domain name was still active on all of the international and local DNS tables and returned a valid IP, it just could not go anywhere.

Thanks Joe,

It's always good to have a confirmation. So far, the tech assistant has called back to tell me that the site is now working, (as if I couldn't figure that out for myself. ), but he didn't know why. I'm beginning to suspect that someone may have just accidentally hit the wrong button at the wrong time, without even noticing, while doing routine maintenance work on the server, and they sheepishly corrected it, after I called. All's well that ends well, I suppose, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

Thanks,
Tex

Dear Tex and Joe,

Yep, I got the ole 'Port 80' notice this morning when I tried to access the site and that is almost always a problem at server level. (or so my techie hubby tells me...) Good to have a geek around the house. :)
Hugs, Wren
