What's next

Post by mar516 »

I had 8 weeks of entecort, now I'm on 8 weeks of 8 chewable pepto tabs a day. Anyone know what would be the next course of treatment?

Hi Mary,

You didn't say, so I have to guess that the reason you're posting the question is because the Pepto treatment isn't helping.

If you're asking what your doctor is likely to prescribe next, my best guess would be one of the brands of mesalamine, if you haven't already tried that. The next step after that would probably be an immune system suppressant, such as Imuran, or possibly one of the Anti-TNF drugs. Of course, a few doctors just give up when they reach this point, and advise their patients to learn to live with the symptoms.

Most of us avoid that medical merry-go-round by treating ourselves. We remove the foods that are most likely to be causing the symptoms from our diet, and that will allow our gut to heal, and as it heals, the symptoms will slowly disappear.

When drugs don't bring relief, diet changes are the only way we have to stop the symptoms.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
