Doctors Visit
Had a farewell "followup" visit with my GP today. (I really like her a lot).
Told her how good I'm starting to feel, BP down, off a couple meds, etc. She was just beaming. She wrote down the name of the diet. She had never heard of it. She seemed just fine with the content of the diet. She also told me I have lost 11 lbs since the end of May. That just tells me I had a mental block about how much I weiged - LOL.
She had no problem with me cutting down on my BP med. She wrote out a prescription for a lesser mg, and said as long as I keep tracking it myself that I could adjust it as needed.
All in all, I think I have had a good day. I am going back tomorrow to have blood drawn for a simple total cholesterol check. Just to see if it's dropping. I want to know where I stand with that, or I wouldn't do it. She urged me to get another bone density in January.
I think that's going to be better too.
Well, just wanted to share.

Hi Shirley,
Super! You're on a roll! The news just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it.
I'm so glad to see that taking control of your own health is really working well for you.
Love,
Wayne
P S I'm betting that you'll see an improvement in your cholesterol levels, too.
P P S That's impressive that your doctor is taking such an interest in the paleo diet--you must have really caught her attention with your relatively fast results.

I do believe I did. She has always seemed to really listen and really care about me. She asks a lot of questions and you can tell you have her complete concentration. I believe she really has the patient's best interest at heart and I'm going to keep her updated on my progress once in a while.
I know that I never expected to get the results that I have experienced so far with the diet. I thought it would be a very slow gradual improvement. God is Good!!!
Love,
Shirley

You have all the reason in the world to be pleased with yourself - I am so glad for you, Shirley
You are doing extremely well, aren't you?!! 11 lbs since the end of May; and the BP is down too. It is very encouraging to hear how well you are doing. No wonder your GP wants to hear more about the diet. She sounds like a keeper. Be sure to take some pictures of yourself so you can see the progress after a few more months of loosing weight. Before and after shots, you know.
Hearing about the kinds of health problems that you have been and are taking medications for reminds me of the book that is called Protein Power by the Drs. Eades - have you read it? They mention a few case stories in their book that really make you take notice because of how fast the progress is especially considering the severity of the problems the subjects in the case studies had.
Keep up the good work, Shirley - God is Good

Inspired by the paleolithic diet and lifestyle -
living w/o gluten, dairy, soy, corn, and yeast.

Thanks Karen,
No, I hadn't even heard of the book but I'll see if I can find it now. Sounds interesting. I know I was a carb-o-holic. I think that's where most of my weight came from which was worsened by the prednisone induced increase in appetite. I don't mind that appetite now since I can eat as much as I want and still lose weight it seems. Of course, I'm sure it will slow down the more I lose, so I will have to rein it in sooner or later. Being able to eat as much as I want, though, keeps this from feeling like a "diet". I prefer to think of it as a lifestyle change.
I'd really love to keep my doctor here but she doesn't want to move to Florida. She told me to make sure I found someone who is concerned about my whole body and not just the complaint I came in with. That's what I like about her. She will ask questions and probe to find out if there is anything bothering me that I didn't consider worth mentioning.

Way to go Shirley!!!!
Sounds like you had a great report from your Doc. I'm so glad. The good news is as you progress with the diet you will most likely feel better and be able to take fewer meds for whatever is ailing you so the need for continual physican supervision will decrease.
I'm so glad your feeling so well AND losing weight as an added benefit. Have you noticed any change in your muscle or joint pain?
Keep on truckin...
Love,
Joanna

Joanna,
I still have aches and pains but less than I had before starting the diet. I trust that will continue to improve. Seems like my right shoulder and hip are still pretty sore, but I'm hoping that will improve also.
I hope to be looking like a different person by the time you see me again.

Shirley,
I agree with your doctor. A lot of doctors these days are mostly interested in treating the symptoms that are brought to them, and they rarely give any thought to the patients longterm overall health needs. Everyone wants to be a "specialist"--that gets them off the hook for sure.

Wayne

Hi Liz,
Shirley is following her own version of the Hunter-Gatherer diet, (some call it the paleolithic diet, or the caveman diet). Here's a link to some information about it, (taken from the Links to Good Information Sites forum.

Many of us are having very good results with this diet, or some modification of it, to suit our own particular lifestyles. If you are interested, there is a lot of discussion on the web, about why the human digestive system was developed for this diet, and has never really evolved further.
For example, here are some good articles by Dr. Cordain:

I, amongst others, have found this diet immensely helpful. Simple to follow in that i have not had to look for any specific product but in my favorite mode of thinking , eat as close to the vine as possible. Eliminating grains, buying fresh fruit and vegetables, natural meats and fish , nuts and no processed foods makes shopping trips quick and easy. Since going on the diet I have learned to eat to live rather than live to eat. Not really a diet but just how I feel best.
Hope you give it a try.
To your continued recovery.
