Hurricane Rita is strengthening
I have read that Rita will become a catagory 4 hurricane by 6:00pm tomorrow. I have been looking on the internet but I cannot find an article about it. (If I find an article, I´ll post it to verify the breaking news).
As of right now, MSNBC is stating it already as a Cat. 3 prediction.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9389157/
Rita´s projected path is towards Texas.
See projected path
Please, take care all of you and be safe.
This hurricane seems to be a twin of Katrina.

Hi Tessa,
Thank you for the chart of the predicted path of Rita. You keep up with these hurricanes better than I do. I usually don't worry about them, since I live about 150 miles inland, but it appears that I am right in the middle of where Rita is projected to be on Saturday afternoon.
A catagory 2 or 3 storm wouldn't normally be much of a concern, this far inland, but a catagory 4 or 5 storm, can cause a lot of problems. Now that you have focused my attention on it, I believe that I will watch it much more closely, and start making preparations. I need to tie down some grain elevators, and move some things to safer locations, where they will be safe from high winds, and wind-blown rain, and make sure that the emergency generators are ready to go, in case the power lines go down.
Thanks for the links.
Love,
Wayne

I don't know how far inland you are, Oma, but it might be a good idea. There was hardly a carport roof left last year in the community we live in there in Florida. We were one of the few lucky ones. Don't know why it didn't take ours.

Oma, you are far enough inland that you shouldn't have serious wind problems. Unless the storm travels across Texas at a faster than normal rate, the winds should die down to 40 or 50 mph, or less, by the time it gets to you. The longer it takes to get there, the slower the winds should be. Of course the actual wind velocity at various points inland will depend on the wind speed when it makes landfall. The jury is still out on that. Of couirse, where it actually ends up tracking will depend on how soon the high pressure moves out of the way, also. It's still at least three and a half days away from us. A lot can happen in three and a half days.

Rita already a cat. 3 hurricane and increasing
I have read that Joe Bastardi was on FOX and that he said Rita would become a 5 and hit as 4 or 5 and would be the most powerful storm to hit that region in over 100 years.
This really looks like it could be another Katrina.
Bastardi is known to be one of the more accurate meteorologists out there, if I lived ANYWHERE on Texas coast I'd get out right now...
A clear eye has appeared on IR imagery, and the radar appearance is that of a major hurricane (cat 3+). It appears this is another very dangerous situation facing the United States, zeroing in on Corpus Christi. There is nothing that will prevent Rita from becoming a category 4 or 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.
NOAA float data
Note: Rita is much larger than was Katrina in this similar location, which means Rita may expand to a size similar to Katrina.
Text extract from hurricane report:
IT WOULD NOT BE A
SURPRISE IF RITA BECAME A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE IN THE NEXT 24 HR
BEFORE WEAKENING SOMEWHAT DUE TO A CONCENTRIC EYEWALL CYCLE OR THE
LOWER OCEAN HEAT CONTENT WEST OF THE LOOP CURRENT. RITA SHOULD
MAINTAIN MAJOR HURRICANE STATUS UNTIL LANDFALL...THEN WEAKEN AFTER
LANDFALL.

Please, watch the news and follow instructions. If you live on the coast, get away and if you live inland... Be sure to take all the precautions needed...
Wayne, I am sure you know what to do in such circumstances. But, please, take care.
I´ll post updates, the soon I know more about it.
Love,
Tessa.

Updates
MIAMI, Sept 21 (Reuters) - After lashing the Florida Keys, Hurricane Rita gained power on Wednesday and headed across the Gulf of Mexico on a course that could take it to Texas and dump more rain on Katrina-battered Louisiana.
Rita was upgraded to a Category 3 storm and the National Hurricane Center said it probably would develop into a Category 4 on Wednesday, the same classification as Hurricane Katrina, which devastated parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama last month...

Oggghhh
Hurricane Rita picks up strength as it heads to the Texas Gulf Coast and is upgraded to a Category 4 storm with winds topping 220 kph (135 mph). The mayor of one Texas city has already declared a state of emergency and ordered evacuations.

Please, if you on Rita´s path, go now!
Tex, I hope you are very busy making all the preparation to face the hurricane...

Hi Tessa,
Thanks for looking up all this information. It is helpful, and I'm basing my plans on it, and making preparations.

Possibly a cat. 5 in hours
DATA FROM RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT RITA HAS INTENSIFIED
A LITTLE MORE AND WINDS HAVE REACHED 150 MPH WINDS WITH A MINIMUM
PRESSURE OF 920 MB. THIS MAKES RITA A STRONG CATEGORY FOUR
HURRICANE.

Keep on preparing yourself and take care.

DATA FROM RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT RITA HAS REACHED
CATEGORY FIVE INTENSITY WITH ESTIMATED MAXIMUM SUSTAINED SURFACE
WINDS OF 165 MPH. THIS WILL BE REFLECTED IN THE 4 PM CDT ADVISORY.
NOAA
Oh, my God!
Furthermore, Rita looks like she may become an annular hurricane, which means these types of storms are not prone to fluctuations in intensity related to eyewall replacement cycles.
There might not be an official 'Cat 6' hurricane or whatever, but I am worried about this specific hurricane. It´s getting powerful very quickly, therefore, (not that it will make landfall this way) but it could go beyond a Cat 5 if it reached say 200 MPH sustained winds...
If you are on its path, on the coast, please GO NOW!
Watch out for its path forecasts...
There is a high probability making landfall with a high Cat. Better preventing...
Take care of yourselves, and please, keep on telling us your situation. (whenever possible).
Thank you.
Love,
Tessa.
