Hi Paula and Gloria,
Thanks for the info on Pepto. I did try the liquid on a particularly bad D day and it didn't seem to help at all. Are you all like me? Wired up backwards so that what is supposed to help doesn't? I had to fight this all my life. Must be the genes or DNA or something.
Maybe it would be wise to try Pepto tabs before taking the trip to know if they will help. Then again I've got an appt for a new GI dr who's local and maybe he/she can give some direction.

Be kinder than necessary for everyone is fighting some kind of battle.
I don't understand why you would expect Pepto to bring immediate results. Like Entocort, or any other medication used for treating MC, it usually takes 2 or 3 weeks for Pepto-Bismol to show results. Except for those who can't tolerate it, Pepto trials showed roughly an 85% efficacy rate - far better than Entocort, or any other drug used to treat MC. It was the first medication proven to control the symptoms of MC, and it's still the most effective one available, but a significant percentage of people cannot tolerate it.

Before being diagnosed with MC I tried the pepto "cure, all 8 weeks of it. The D did stop but came back after a few weeks and didn't work the second time I tried it. Of course, I was still eating gluten at that time. When I started entocort I had been GF for a few weeks and after one day of taking 9 mg of entocort, no more D. It was unbelievable!! Within a week I was down to 3 mg a day because of severe C on 9 mg and moderate C at 6 mg. We are all different but the big difference for me was stopping gluten.

Brownie,
You didn't mention if you're using Imodium AD, but it provides quick results, usually without side effects. You should be sure to take some on your trip. Entocort is longer-lasting, but both are temporary solutions and will cease to be effective as soon as they are out of your system, unless you have changed your diet.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Thanks everyone for all the tips. Just getting over a very nasty
early morning reaction to something and I can't figure out what
I ate. I thought everything was "safe" but sometimes I forget or
would like to forget that I am also supposed to be on a bland diet too and fried my pork chop. Is it possible to have such a bad reaction (D and nausea, headache) to fried food?
Has that happened to any of you?

I never seemed to have a problem with fried foods, but if that was a cast iron skillet, or a teflon-coated frying pan, it's possible to be "glutened" that way. I assume that you didn't bread it with wheat flour, but if you used any commercial breading, that would have probably contained gluten, unless you selected a GF mix.
Also, when we're in the recovery stage, sometimes we just get sick, without knowing why.
I hope you feel better soon.

Brownie,
I have definitely had "just because" reactions... It's good to try to think what might have caused it, and to eliminate sources of gluten contamination in the kitchen. But if you can't figure it out, and it goes away... that is better than the other way around
Something like that happened to me quite recently and I was pretty concerned. It seems to have been temporary, and it might be that I was a little under the weather with whatever was bothering my husband, and in my case (of course) it went straight to my gut (and sour stomach, which is not typical for me). I was still better off than he was, though - fever, aches, and alternating between "resting" and "napping," for over a week...
Hope you're feeling better,
Sara

Hi Tex,
I didn't realize the Pepto treatment doesn't work right away. Glad I haven't started that yet.
Sara sorry you had a spell too and glad to hear you both are better. They seem to last about 24 hours for me and now I am much better but it does make one
cautious so maybe they do serve more of a purpose than just
making us miserable.
But I have to confess that after seeing over and over to check labels I didn't. Store brand crystal light "may contain traces of...wheat and soy. How dumb can I be? That pitcher of peach
flavored drink was dumped then and there. Could have been the culprit.

I had a (senior?) lapse yesterday. I decided to make a new recipe of homemade spicy brown mustard. I doubled
the recipe to make sure I had plenty to give away. AFTER I stirred everything together I thought, "I just put
Guinness extra stout in this (which I went out and bought specifically for the recipe). I CAN'T eat this!" Duh!!!!

Brownie,
That Crystal Light might have other ingredients that cause you trouble, especially while you're healing. The artificial sweeteners are rough on many of us (some of them upset me long before MC). Also some artificial colorings are known to be problematic.
Of course, you're right - 'traces of wheat and soy' could certainly do the trick!
Feel better, everyone, and Deb - at least you figured it out *before* you ate it!
