The specialty is in gastroenterology, but gastroenterologists diagnose and treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, so they are typically referred to as "GI docs". It seems counterintuitive, but if you Google "GE doc", you usually won't get any hits related to gastroenterology, whereas googling "GI doc", works. :shrug:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
