Vitamin D question

Vitamin D question

I see that the majority here feel like Vitamin D is very beneficial, I have been taking it for just under a year, but have REAL issues with swallowing pills. I do whatever I can to avoid them, so I am getting my vitamin's in a gummy chewable form. I am currently taking 2000 IU's a day, (my last vitamin d in my blood was 24, which was just under normal) I am wondering though, since it is gummy if I am not getting as much as I would if I was taking a pill? Do you think I should increase it?

When I just went to my thyroid dr as well as the allergist and informed them of the medications I was taking, neither seemed concerned at all that I was taking 2000 IU's a day.

There are also drops - Carlson's is one brand, but there are others. Each drop has either 1,000IU or 2,000IU. I think with a level of 24, you could up it. I take 4,000IU/day in the summer, except when I really get a lot of sun. At this time of year I'm taking 6,000IU/day (I do sometimes skip a day). My level was 49 - twice yours, and not at all high. If it were me, I would like to see level considerably higher than 24, while you're recovering from MC. I am, of course, not a doctor... How are you feeling?

Sara - thanks for asking, I am so much better since going Gluten free, crossing my fingers that gluten is all I need to give up.

The full body rash is gone, my brain fog is almost totally gone, no new ridges in my nails so the others should be grown out soon. Joint pain gone too. Digestive wise I was not as bad as most of you, but I see a huge difference there too.

My only complaint is my face is still very red, itching in some spots and burning. My biggest probelm with that is my face has always had sensitive skin and VERY oily, I mean VERY!!!!! So I am struggling with finding a gluten free product that controls the oil and doesn't contain something I have a reaction to. Both in a wash and a makeup. A lot of gluten free makeups are mineral, well with my oil they just run right off. I am still hunting though.

That's great news you got such decisive results eliminating only gluten. I"m sure you know that dairy is your next likely suspect (and for a lot of people, not necessarily MC folks, it does seem to be implicated with skin problems). For me, that was easier to give up than gluten - not from preference so much as because it's 'hidden' in fewer things...

I agree with Sara about the vitamin D. I live in sunny Texas, and I take 2,500 IU of vitamin D in the summer, and 5,500 IU during the rest of the year when sun exposure is less. My vitamin D test level was 46, the last two times I had it checked.

I'm glad to hear that most of your symptoms are so much better. Thanks for the update.

Sara/Tex - Thanks I will increase my dosage to at least 5,000 IU. Do you think I am absorbin enough in the gummy form or do you think it is about the same as the pill form?

Sara - I am lactose free as well, so far that seems to be "enough" but I know that some of things do not show up for a little bit, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that I got ahold of this early enough.

I did do the Entrolab tests, but only for Gluten, my number was 26 units.

I think I will be having the vitamin D checked again at the end of this month, believe it or not the only dr that seems to check this for me is my Rheumy.

I would think that those should probably work OK. That's just a guess, of course, because I'm not aware of any comparison trials.

I think we forgot to mention... check your gummy Vitamin D and make sure it's vitamin D3, not D2. The D3 is much better utilized by the body..

It might be called: cholecalciferol (that's the good one, D3), or ergocalciferol (waste of time). And no, I don't know that by heart, I looked it up. You don't have to memorize it, either - just check if/when you switch brands...
