Mornin' Y'all!
PLEASE take good care of yourselves this week. I am worrying about all of you...........and hoping against hope that this hurricane will calm down and fade into the sunset.
Luce, your plan sounds excellent. I hope your mom does well. You said you would take your computer - please let us know as soon as you arrive that you are OK. Keeping everything crossed for your family.
tex and Oma - Batten down and stay safe. Tex, I guess if the board goes down, we can just assume it will be up and running when the power returns. Oh, I sure hope that doesn't happen - we'll all be so anxious to hear from our TX friends.
Thinking of you and sending much love and good vibes,
Polly

Hi Polly, Tessa, Karen and Jill,
The Storm doesn't look good at all, does it. It will apparently pass through here sometime Saturday night. The tracking map shows rapidly increasing forward travel speed as it makes landfall, which means that it may be maintaining pretty high winds for a long way inland.
The server on which this board is stored, is approximately twenty miles north of where I live, and is roughly 150 miles inland. It is quite possible that we could have serious problems with power transmission lines, and communicatons of all types, if this storm keeps strengthening, and follows the current projections.
Power lines, and communications systems, will be overloaded, due to heavy use, and as some systems go down, to the south of us, the remaing ones will be even more overloaded, so I would expect that it is very likely that my ISP will not be able to maintain normal operation at all times. IOW, I think we can expect that it is very likely that this board will be down for a while. I hope not, but I believe that we certainly face that possibility, due to the severity of this storm.
I have backups, and I'll be making more backups on a fairly regular basis, as the storm approaches, just in case everything has to be restored completely. IOW, don't be surprised if you log on and see a message that the board is closed for maintenance, come back in 30 minutes. I can backup the software that operates the board, without closing it, but I have to close the board to make a backup of the database, which holds the actual data from all our posts, profiles, etc.
I guess it's time to start battening down the hatches.
Love,
Wayne
P S If anyone needs to contact me, and has misplaced my cellphone number, it's 254-718-1125, but I would expect that during the height of the confusion, as the storm passes, and immediately afterward, the systems will be overloaded, and getting a call through may take a lot of persistance.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I have put everybody in the path of Rita in God's hands. I am so sad and worried.
Thanks for the phone number, Wayne. Just having it makes me feel a little better.
I hope and I hope for the best and I fear the worst.
Luce, your bulletins are marvellous. We are very fortunate to have you on Board, as they say.
Take care of yourselves and families and friends.
Lots of love,
Sally

My prayers and hopes for a downward turn in this storm is being sent your way. Wayne, thanks for the number and I will keep it close at hand. This has been such a horrible storm season and I can only hope that this is the end - we all can hope for that regarless of the storm casters.
Please take care and we need to set up our telephone relay system now in case the board goes down.
Love and stay safe, Maggie

Stay safe everyone! I programmed the number into my cell phone Wayne. Hope there's no need to check on you.
The number of storms predicted this year will exhaust the alphabet - they are saying they will need to go into the Greek alphabet to continue with names. I feel so helpless when this type of thing happens.
My prayers are with all of you I know and all of those I don't.

This is unbelievable isn't it? What a mess...
It's so hard to comprehend Katrina and it's tragic wake much less swallow storm Rita- a catagory 5 already and a couple days from landfall? My brother in the Fla. Keys lucked out, again, and I feel guilty for being gratefull for that.
Shirley, yes, my cell number is the same and Wayne has my home phone number. Let's hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.
Please take care Luce, Oma and Wayne. Praying big time in AK. Keep the updates coming.
Love,
Joanna

Hi all....so far Mike and I are ok. We are in a trailer that sits in the 1/2 of a barn we have up....(temp til we build) So if it comes down to it....you can bet Mike and I will abandon the trailer and go to safe ground. I am going to give My home Number to Tex, Babara, and Sally. I don't want to broadcast it over the board since we are public now.... Looks like a nasty storm huh? Love Oma
May I be more compassionate and loving than yeterday*and be able to spot the idiots in advance
Well it is after 11pm here, and I came on souly to find out who is in the path of Rita, and if you are going to be safe. PLEASE, PLEASE go to a safer place if they say to do it. I worry now because so many thought they could remain safe by staying where they were, since they had been through so many storms they felt prepared to do it. THen of course it was far worse then any ever expected. So stay safe. Take care of your families and if the board does go down, which is a likelyhood, we can do a phone relay. I am getting more worried as I see Saturday coming and as I hear the broadcasts. Bless you all, and take care..........there is nothing more I can say to you that you don't already know. Having never been through anything more then a little hurricane when I was little, that turned out to be more of a big adventure then anything else. I do remember the huge trees that were torn out by the roots, lots and lots of rain, hailstones, and having no electricity for days. But to a kid, well its an adventure, since we were still safe in our homes riding it out. We had gone out for a swim when it came in, we had a big old bus that was converted into a moving home, and we always packed a bunch of kids in it and headed out to our swimming hole. It was the biggest storm we had ever had, then of course as a kid we didn't understand all the dangers. We had a such a heat wave that summer and when the electricity went out a store, (the only store in our town of 500) started giving out free ice-cream cones and popsicles, as much as we wanted. They seen no sence in seeing it all go to waste, so they gave it away free. Since we were pretty poor, that was the biggest highlight of the whole summer, free ice cream and popsicles. Now I know what a far cry this is to what really happens in a big hurricane like happened with Katrina and now Rita. And we had well water, and there were no shortages of the essentials like so many are going through now. Its just so sad. Makes you feel so helpless.
