Bottom Fell Out (Literally)
I've got to vent.
My husband, Jerry, stopped taking the Entocort as it seemed like he was having more problems with it then without. He had already eliminated dairy and soy and agreed to try gluten-free and was starting to get results. UNTIL..... he got cellulitis and ended up in the hospital Tuesday on two IV antibiotics. He was discharged yesterday and is on Augmentin for 7 days. And the D is back big time. Sigh.
He decided tonight that since he was going to have the D right now regardless of what he does, he had a big serving of macaroni and cheese. As expected, the results were disastrous. Afterwards, even water had a bad effect. SMH

I am so very sorry. I once was hospitalized for five days with cellulitis. I trust he is recovering OK.
The Augmentin (not to mention the hospital food) could well be the source of his flare up. I also know he has to have the Augmentin. Sometimes something more serious overides our cronic conditions. I can understand his attitude but now that he sees it can get worse, perhaps he is will to go back on the diet.
I know it is very hard on you also.

Hi Barb,
I'm sorry to hear what has happened. Shirley is correct - the antibiotic is almost surely the reason why he is reacting, but, of course, the macaroni and cheese aren't helping anything, and will also cause a setback.
Please be aware that antibiotics are a leading cause of C. diff infections, and Augmentin, (amoxicillin), seems to have the worst track record of all the antibiotics, in that regard. It's a very good idea for anyone with MC to take a good probiotic for at least 2 or 3 weeks, after a treatment with amoxicillin, in order to try to prevent a C. diff infection. If his diarrhea, and/or abdominal pain, should become worse, and especially if blood begins to show up in the stool, suspect a C. diff infection. Things may be bad now, but they can get worse, unfortunately.
The probiotic should be started on the same day that the last antibiotic treatment is taken. Hopefully, that will prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
He was not a happy camper last night so is back to GF today. He had started taking Culturelle last week. Should he be taking it while on the Augmentin?
Oh, and no doubt about needing the antibiotic because cellulitis MUST be treated. One good thing, in the hospital, he told them that he was allergic to gluten and dairy so they did have him on a gluten and dairy free diet.

I'm not sure there's any point to taking it while taking the antibiotic, because the antibiotic will promptly kill just about all of the probiotic bacteria, anyway, but he should definitely begin taking it as soon as he takes the last dose of antibiotic.Barb wrote:Should he be taking it while on the Augmentin?
Good for the hospital for providing a GF, DF diet. A lot of hospitals are still behind on providing for patient's who have special diet needs.
I hope that he can make some good progress this week,

As I have probably mentioned before, I worked for Beecham Labs back in the 80's when Augmentin first came out. I don't know what company makes it now. Beecham was bought by SmithKline, etc., etc. It is nasty stuff. It's not just the amoxicillin, it is the clavulanic acid. The clavulanic acid is wrapped in amoxicillin because it is explosive. I worked in production planning and inventory control. One day we got word that some containers of clavulanic acid sitting on the wharf in London waiting to be shipped to the US for formulation into Augmentin had gotten wet, exploded, and caused a fire.
