Celiac possibly triggered by trauma?
This is an article about a young girl whose celiac may have been triggered as a result of a serious accident. None of her immediate family tested positive for celiac.

I do believe a trauma can trigger celiac disease and the same for MC, it can be a physical trauma like an accident, but also an emotional trauma. In my case I believe my MC was triggered by an emotional trauma.

That is possible for me also. I had about 5 tramatic situations (emotional) within a space of about 4 months. An automobile accident severely affecting 3 of my husband's family, had to spend about 5 weeks in Ga. because Dad had to go to a nursing home and I had to find one to take him (alzheimers), Bill's quad bypass surgery, Dad's death, quit smoking. All were traumatic and it just didn't stop coming it seemed, so if stress can trigger it, I think it could have triggered my MC.harma wrote: I believe my MC was triggered by an emotional trauma.

There was a thread recently in which we were discussing stress and how our "fight or flight" response is basically a histamine reaction. It makes sense that stress would affect how our bodies respond on a cellular level. I believe there are quite a few celiac sufferers who trace their symptoms back to a traumatic event, though it can also be triggered by illness, pregnancy, etc, etc.

Research shows that stress can alter gut bacteria, and it is known that gut bacteria can alter genes, (trigger genetic events), so I am convinced that stress can indeed trigger genetic diseases.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
There is no doubt in my mind that my MC was triggered by my brother's suicide and the aftermath within the family. I can literally track it to the week my nonstop D started. I can also trace my chronic stomach aches that happened when I was 9 to a fear/stress response.
Resolved MC symptoms successfully w/L-Glutamine, Probiotics and Vitamins, GF since 8/'09. DX w/MC 10/'09.
My C. colitis may have been laying dormant but it struck me during a time of extreme stress, emotional, and financial. Everyone at work was being laid off. I survived the layoffs but inherited this disease during this period. My family doctor thought it was just acid-reflux from stress but it turned out to be something far more serious and I have never been the same since. Most mornings I wake up and lay in bed with an upset stomach. I believe, trauma can trigger many physical ailments.

I am a fine example of how stress can cause all kinds of illness, one namely MC.
My adult life has been one damn thing after another and no time to regroup.
I find that it isn't when the stress is going on, but after a crisis is when I get hit
with the ill effects.

Dee,
My body falls apart after the crisis and most often there's been little or no regroup time in between. I'm trying to stay aware of this and not get so stressed over things I can't do anything about. Usually, I'm still picking up the pieces while other family members are shopping for their next trip - and they don't have these health issues.

It is important to be able to sacrifice what we are for what we can become.
