FDA Ignores Science

Post by Rosie »

This article comes as no surprise........ the foxes are guarding the hen house, and us chickens suffer.......

The integrity of the scientific review process appears to be at the heart of recent allegations that Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials spied electronically on whistleblowers—including scientists, an engineer, and a statistician—trying to expose alleged flaws in the agency's approval process for cancer-screening devices.

Specifically, they said that "since 2006, FDA physicians and scientists have recommended five times not to approve mammography CAD [computer-aided detection] devices" because they failed to detect breast cancer and led to invasive and unnecessary follow-up work. FDA managers pushed for approving the devices anyway, allegedly "ordering, coercing, and intimidating FDA physicians and scientists to recommend approval, and then retaliating when the physicians and scientists refused to go along."

In March 2009, FDA asked another physician (not part of the FDA nine) to review a colonoscopy device that used computed tomography (CT). The CT device already had FDA approval for some applications, but the manufacturer wanted it used as a general, population-wide screening tool for colon cancer. The physician rejected this use, arguing that the device did not work well and that, because each examination involved getting the equivalent of 800 x-rays, the device might actually cause a small increase in cancer. The FDA approved the device, and the physician complained vociferously.
Of course this begs the question of why these devices were being approved despite negative reviews....... I wonder if there will be any sort of followup investigation......

Hi Rosie,

IMO, the FDA is totally out of control, and virtually everyone close to, and at the top, should be replaced. They are, (and have been for years), habitual abusers of the public trust. If cleaning house at the top doesn't get results, then the purging of ranks obviously needs to go a lot further. I seriously doubt it will ever happen, though, because the Congress is overwhelmed by the relatively straightforward task of keeping the government running. They can hardly be expected to be able to sort out additional thorny problems of corruption and incompetence in regulatory agencies, when they have so many problems of their own. :sigh:

Thanks for posting the information.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Yeah, Rosie, the foxes are guarding the henhouse, if you click on the links in your link you see that names, etc. are blacked out. Never underestimate the power of the food lobby in what the FDA approves. Remember thalidomide? I trust nothing the FDA approves, most certainly not the drugs. I agree w/Tex that they are completely out of control. Our government is out of control and they keep us panicked about unemployment, etc. and distract us from the poison we're being fed with all sorts of BS and this just goes on and on, controlling party after controlling party, it's all the same. Money rules.
