Thorne and Pure Encapsulations can be bought at several places. Do not buy from a practitioner, unless necessary, because they mark up their price significantly! Amazon sells both Thorne and Pure Encapsulations, so you can save time, gas, and money by ordering them. Or, if you don't want to wait, call around to several naturopathic clinics or even compounding pharmacies. Most of the top notch places will carry Metagenics, Pure, and Thorne. For what it's worth, I like Pure Encapsulations better. Thorne has more filler ingredients and some of their pills doesn't agree with me, but I have had no such problems with Pure.

I'm not so concerned about palm oil. It has been used for centuries in other parts of the world for cooking. The raw form has lots of beta carotene, but you don't hear about people in Africa and Asia having Vitamin A toxicity. In fact, those are considered regions of the world in need of Vitamin A supplementation. This doesn't compute for me.

You don't hear about much of anything in those parts of the world, that pertain to supplements or drugs, because the residents of those countries mostly rely on traditional herbal remedies, and either aren't interested in western supplements or drugs, or they can't afford to spend money on them, so the drug companies are not likely to sponsor any studies over there. Another case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease. In this country, we're gullible enough to fall for all the sales pitches, so we see more studies of issues such as that.

Also, the residents of those countries are less likely to have celiac or gluten-sensitive genes.

Susan and Mandy,

Thank you both for the information. I'm researching the Pure Encapsulations vitamins and they seem to be OK, but expensive, as you wrote.

I've just sent an email to Freeda Vitamins with the links Tex posted. I asked them what percentage of the vitamin A is beta-carotene and what percentage is palmitate. Then I asked them if they have any plans for offering a multivitamin with just beta-carotene vitamin A. I'll post their response once I receive it.

Tex, Gloria, Susan and Mandy,

Thanks for this critical info!

Tex I'm discontinuing the fish oil. Being the 3rd generation of osteopenia I can't take the risk....plus now I'm eating a lot of low mercury fish anyways.....plus now my joint pain is gone due to being GF.

Susan, Mandy and Glorida---thanks for the vitamin info. I think it would be an option for my Mom.

This is an extremely important topic for anyone with bone issues.

Brandy,

I have fairly severe osteoporosis and stopped taking Fosamax a couple of years ago. My DEXA scan showed further deterioration last fall, so I am presently taking Doctor's Best Strontium Bone Maker every evening. I won't know if it has helped until I have my next density scan, but I've been encouraged by other member's reporting on an osteoporosis board I occasionally visit.

Strontium is an OTC supplement in this country, but strontium ranelate is a widely prescribed drug in Europe. Many studies available on the web have shown its effectiveness. Here's one:

Thanks Gloria,

I'm going to check in on what my mother is taking. She was on fosomax for awhile and I'm not really sure what she's doing now. Keep us posted on your results! Brandy

Gloria - have you taken boron? It helped me when I showed signs of osteopenea.

As for the vitamin A - I couldn't tolerate palm oil. Is all this why?

Lesley,

I checked my multiple vitamin and it doesn't contain boron. I'll give it some thought. Thanks for the suggestion.

It doesn't come in a multivitamin. I bought it separately. And took it for a long time. I actually only stopped when I stopped everything because of the D.
It does help.

Leslie,
How much boron did you take for the osteopenia? I'm thinking of trying it.

Shirley,
If I remember the pills had 3 mgs. But don't hold me to it. My memory is pathetic.
