Augmentin

Post by draperygoddess »

hi guys,

I have apparently developed a sinus infection, and my PA prescribed Augmentin, because many of her patients recently have not responded to Amoxycillin and other antibiotics, and she ends up prescribing the Augmentin anyway. However, after reading some of the posts here, I'm scared to take it! After six months of trial and error, I feel like I'm just now getting a handle on my MC, and I'm afraid to mess it up. Any advice?

Well, the biggest problem with Augmentin is that it is rated as one of the leading causes of C. diff infections, but that doesn't mean that it will cause C. diff in your case. I have no idea what the actual risk level might be. I would definitely take a good probiotic if I were going to use it.

I have to agree - that seems to be the way that the routine usually goes. :sigh: It's always something.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi Cynthia. Sorry to hear you have a sinus infection. I am sorta a newbie to the group and don't have the same symptoms as most in this forum as my colitis has caused terrible gas and c rather than d. I felt I needed to post a reply to you because I have been plagued with chronic sinus infections since I was a teenager and Augmenting XR became my "go to" antibiotic because nothing else worked. At the time I started taking it, I really had no stomach issues to speak of but that changed when I took Augmentin. It definitely causes excess gas, bloating, and the urge to go to the bathroom frequently. I took it almost regularly for 5 years - at least 3 times a year. The last 2 times I took it I got terrible gastritis and missed a week of work each time and this was 2 months apart. After that I haven't been the same as my stomach health deteriorated and after 6 more months of being sick, got the dx of LC. IOW, be very careful and, as Tex said,
definitely take a probiotic along with taking on a full stomach should you decide to take the Aumentin. The dose I took was very high so you probably have a much lower dose but you still need to make sure you have a full tummy when taking it. Hope that helps you some.
Please consider rescuing a dog from your local shelter today.

Thanks for the input, everybody--I am already so nauseated from the drainage and the OTC medicine I'm taking, I don't think I can keep it down anyway. I'll wait and see how I feel tomorrow. Going to bed now.

I don't know if this will help or not. My husband suffered from sinus infections for about 10 years. He had all the allergy testing and everything came out negative. He was always on augmentin and steroids; at least 4 times a years and sometimes more. He finally went to a very good ENT and turns out he was full of polyps which would constantly cause infections. He had them removed. I might add here the surgery was a breeze for him. (very good doctor). This was two years ago and he has not had an infection since then.

I would recommend for anyone who gets an unusual amount of sinus infections to get checked for polyps.
