Until last week I thought I was fine with them. Oats don't have gluten but they have a similar protein. Apparently many people react to it like gluten.

Belle,
More than a few of us react to the avenin in oats that Marliss mentioned, but I have no idea what the percentage of us who react to it might be. I'm one of them.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

I'm OK with oats, but I always check to see if there are any wheat/barley type ingredients first. For example, "real" Cheerios, which I liked a lot, contain an ingredient, I think barley malt, that rules them out for me. But the Millville brand, sold at Aldi, does not (and they don't have that distinctive Cheerios taste) But, they aren't produced on a dedicated GF line. So, highly reactive folks wouldn't want to eat those either.
I don't do oatmeal--can't get past the texture of it, though I tried Bob's Red Mill GF oats.

I only eat certified GF oats - Bobs Red Mill and Trader Joe's carry them. I also like Udi's GF granola, but I don't eat oats often. Cheerios contain wheat starch, but the problem with non-GF oats (any oat-containing product not labeled GF), is that they frequently get cross-contaminated with wheat in the storage/production process. So you may think you may be reacting to oats, when in fact you're reacting to wheat mixed into the oats. Some people react to the avenin protein in oats too (like Tex).

I'm the opposite of most of you, oats appear to be the one thing that I am intolerant too! Although if I eat too much gluten I get side effects!
