Head cold and subsequent MC flare

Post by goldgeogirl »

My husband has been gf for 2 months and was doing great! He recently came down with a head cold, and his MC flared up, as well. Is this common? He hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary, so we can't think of what else it could be. I'm assuming his immune system is fighting his cold, and as a result, attacking his gut.

Hmmmmm. That's probably not common, but it is certainly possible. Has he taken anything for the cold that includes aspirin, (or any NSAIDs)? There are many medications that will trigger MC, including, (but not limited to), NSAIDs, antibiotics, SSRIs, SNRIs, beta blockers, ace inhibitors, statins, bisphosphonates, etc.

Also, the relapse might not be connected with the cold, but with the length of time that he has been GF. After the anti-gliadin antibodies begin to decline, and our symptoms diminish, the immune system will cease to focus all it's attention on gluten, and it will search for other problems. If he is still including dairy products in his diet, try removing them, because most of us who are gluten-sensitive, are also sensitive to casein, the primary protein in all dairy products. If he is already avoiding casein, then soy may be the culprit - about half of us are sensitive to soy.

I hope he can find the problem, and resolve it soon, so that he can get back on track.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

He's been taking Tylenol and Nyquil. He's already casein free. We'll have to look into the soy...We don't use soy flour or soy milk, so I'll have to dig through ingredients in my gluten free mixes. Thanks!

Those meds should be safe, (at least they seem to be safe for most of us).

Sometimes we have a setback for no obvious reason, also.
