Hi Paula,

I can certainly relate to your worry over weight loss. I quickly lost over 20 lbs. after I started the GF, etc. diet. My weight finally stabilized at 121 lbs. after about half a year on the new eating plan, and has pretty much stayed there for over a year now. It's slightly below the minimum weight in the weight tables I've looked at (I'm 5'8"), but it's starting to feel pretty normal to me now. It's actually what I weighed in my early 20's.

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that I attribute it 100% to the diet, and not malapsorbtion. I had the big D. for about 10 years before discovering the diet angle, and never had a problem with losing weight. As Tex said, when you stop eating dessert, bread and dairy, the calorie intake decreases substantially, and thus the weight loss. However, even knowing that, I still worried plenty about it for a long time, and I'd like to gain a few lbs. back. I actually did manage to gain 4-5 lbs. last year, but then when I also had to take histamine intolerance into account in my diet, I quickly lost them again, and have now stabilized back at 121 lbs.

All the best to you as you continue moving towards remission.

Love,
Kari

Hi Paula. I didn't experience as long a time with weight loss because I went on Entocort fairly quickly, but i didn't have any extra weight to spare! Right now I am 5'4'' and 112lb. I can say however that as soon as the D stopped, so did the weight loss. I haven't gained it back, but i have stopped losing.
As other people have stated, avocado and nut butters are my go to "fats". I love to eat eggs and avocado in a corn tortilla heated in oil. Yum. i also made my own pesto without parmesan ( basil, nuts, garlic, olive oil) and tossed it with rice pasta.
I hope you find relief soon.

I lost 24 lbs. and presently weigh 99 lbs. I'd like to weigh more, but am happy to weigh more than the 91 lbs. that I weighed at my lowest point. I have sewed a few pants and shorts, taken the side seams in on some skirts, and have purchased quite a few clothes on clearance. I keep thinking that it's "just until I put the weight back on," but it's been a couple of years now, so I'm not as reluctant to buy new things.

I agree with Kari; the weight loss has been purely due to changing my diet and eating fewer foods and calories.

Hi Paula,

I lost 60 pounds and I attribute it to the diet, mostly. I used to argue with my mother about this since she was very concerned about my weight loss. I told her time and again that when you eliminate all the "crap" you're bound to loose weight. A few years ago I actually ate my dessert before my lunch figuring I could at least get my sweets in before I got full. I would eat a half dozen cookies in one sitting without a thought. I believe I had candida issues at that time. Eliminating all processed foods, gluten, etc. took care of that problem. It was a struggle with the cravings- it brough me to tears. This past summer, at my worst, I pretty much stopped eating because everything made me sick. I felt sick to my stomach and had stomach pains 24/7 and the doctors didn't seemed too concerned. I've put 20 pounds back on, and thanks to the help here, I'm on the right road.

I agree, I don't like shopping. I've held on to my fat clothes for 2 years now and don't like buying new ones because I keep waiting to be "fat" again. I don't like looking at pictures of myself from this past summer- I look sickly. But finding some clothes that fit you will make you feel better. I walked around the office for a long time with droopy drawers and I felt awful about myself. When I did get some clothes that fit me, I felt more like myself again. I frequent thrift shops and get name brand clothes for dollars- that way if my size changes it won't have cost an arm and a leg!

Thank you for all the responses. I think I have to get to a place where I just accept the loss of weight. It's been 2-1/2 yrs, and I have hesitated buying more than a couple smaller pairs of pants to get me by until I gained the weight back. I didn't realize it was going to go lower before getting back up there again. Now it's not only the pants, but tops/shirts as well. Guess I'll be shopping in the next week or so.

But it does make sense that I/we would lose even more weight when we go on the GF/DF/SF diet. I will also be adding recommended foods to my menu to hopefully add more calories.

Hi Paula,

My girlfriend's husband is constantly nagging my girlfriend and myself about our posture. He constantly tells us that good posture is a woman's best beauty secret and it is free. So in tough work situations I throw my shoulders back, stand tall and hold my head up high. Even though I feel shaky inside (who doesn't have tough work situations with this disease) the good posture thing seems to give me confidence during tough work times.

Also I'm not so sure that particularly in the US because we are so overweight as a country...(not so much in Europe) our image of what is the norm for male and female weight has drastically changed from say what it was in the 1950's. If you watch movies from the 1950's or before, particularly movies with a lot of extras, I think men and women probably weighed about 30 or 40 pounds less than what men and women weigh in present day. So when I got down to 128 pounds as a 5'7" woman down from 160 pounds my friends were flipping out that I was extremely underweight but in the 1950's a woman weighing 128 pounds at 5'7" would have been considered to be at a normal weight and not underweight.

Just my thoughts, hope you are well, Brandy

Hi Paula,
I lost about 5 lbs when the MC started, and another 8 lbs when I started the diet, mostly because it took a while to figure out what I could eat! Just when I thought I'd be a size 2 (high school size) forever, I started gaining weight when my MC improved this year. In fact, I think I gained 5 lbs in less than a month! Yikes! It's a good thing I kept my size 4 and 6 clothes! I do think I gained weight because I started eating more GF starches and snacks, and the more starches I eat, the hungrier I get, and I've never been one for portion control...so I'm now in "damage control" and trying to eat more Paleo-like to maintain my weight.

Well, I have bought a couple of new clothing items. You're right - it does make me feel better! Now I have to find more.

And, the posture for sure.

Thanks everyone for your comments. This, like many other things, does come with the territory.

Question -

It seems like some of us have either a great amount of weight loss, minimal loss, or for some none at all.

I have known a woman for many years as a client, and found out this year she was diagnosed with Celiac about a year ago. For her, the weight loss was from about 133 down to 86 lbs. Fortunately she has been able to gain about 13 to 15 lbs. of that back; and, of course, she is trying to gain a lot more back. So... Is the amount of weight loss dependent on which type of MC a person has?

Good question. I only lost about 5 pounds, but I think it depends on how fast you get the D under control ( more then what kind of MC you have)

Leah, I'm sure it may seem that way. But the person I am referring to who has Celiac disease never had D, just C but a huge weight loss of about 45 lbs within a few months. So it does make me wonder if something else is contributing to the amount of weight lost. Do you have LC?

Hi Paula,

I believe the weight loss is related to the kind of food we eat, along with the number of calories we consume more than anything else. For instance, I stopped eating sugar, and most processed food, along with dropping gluten, dairy, etc. I also think that when switching to a higher protein diet, we tend to eat less (fewer calories), since we feel full for a longer period of time.

Hi Paula. Wow, 45 pounds! But I think I agree with Kari on this one. I do a lot of nutritional work with my clients and it would make sense that if you omit many foods-especially carbs, you will lose a lot of weight. Plus protein is not an energy source- glucose (carbs) and fat are. So if you starve your muscles of carbs, it will use fat as it's main energy source.....

PS. I have CC
