Hiatal Hernia, Bloating, Gas
I don't know why, after doing fairly well with GF, that I am having bloating and gas so much; seems, after every meal. I'm careful of foods, but still I don't know what is causing this. I did give up the Zocor about a month ago and started on Niaspan instead. Could it be the Niaspan?
My hiatal hernia has been acting up, but I'm trying to use the jumping up and down method, which seems to help, but the gas and bloating is worse. In checking with the Earth Clinic site, some people use the natural jumping method sometimes for HH. I don't want to take a PPI anymore ever.
My husband has some GasX, and is that okay to use for us, and what about Digestive Advantage Gas Defense? Or, if anyone has something they use for gas/bloating, please, I would be so grateful for your input.
Thanks so much.

Hi Garina from another Floridian. I have chronic gas issues and bloating with my LC and am about 6 weeks into being gf and sf and I've been df for a few months now. I've often felt like the odd one on the forum as I have stated in another post, that I seem to be the only one who complains of chronic gas. I use gas x and it helps somewhat but not always. Tried charcoal tablets and they constipated me really bad. Haven't tried the Digestive advantage. Hoping with gf that the gas issues will settle down soon.

Sondra and Brandy,
I will try the GasX and Beano ... I'm hoping this gas won't be chronic, and I'm hoping for a working solution. I think I will make sure I have both on hand. Thanks so much for the help. We have been in FL now for approximately 3 1/2 years, and we love living here!
Lesley,
"Earthclinic.com" has natural remedies and I often frequent the site. Just go to "Ailments" on the site, and plug in "H" for hiatal hernia, and there are lots of remedies, some I would never try, some I would. The jumping does seem to help ... not a cure all for me, yet, anyway, but some say, it is for them. I think their bodies respond better than mine.
THE SIMPLE FIX I pulled off of Earth Clinic. Also, if you Google hiatal hernia remedies, other sites pop up regarding the same. Another one: www.verlie.com/hyenahernia.html
I even checked with Youtube for demonstrations of self massage treatments for HH. I haven't tried that, yet. I have read where chiropractors can maneuver the abdominals back to normal. I can't comment on that, either. But, I have taken ACV, and I just started that, so I don't know if it will work long-term. I don't know if the HH is the cause of the gas/bloating, but I do know I need a remedy, so Beano, GasX are next to try.
My best,
garina
"A Simple Fix
If the top portion of the stomach is stuck up above the diaphragm, then the obvious answer is to get it out. This can be done in two steps:
Drink about a glass of either room temperature or slightly warm water when you get out of bed first thing in the morning. (No coffee, no tea, no juice, no cold water, just warm water.)
Then, while standing, bring your arms straight out from your sides and bend your elbows so that your hands are touching your chest. Then stand up on your toes as high as possible and DROP down onto your heels, rather like a weightlifter's squat! You should force a pretty good jolt. Drop down like this 10 times in a row. Then, while standing with your arms up, pant short quick breaths for about 15 seconds. That's it.
The warm water acts like a weight in the stomach. Warm water doesn't cause the stomach to cramp, but instead it relaxes it. Spreading your arms stretches the diaphragm and opens up that hole in the back. Dropping down on your heels jerks the stomach out of the hole, and the panting tightens up the diaphragm muscle to close the hole.
You need to do this exercise every day - not just until everything feels normal. This will also strengthen the area, and make the hiatal hernia less likely to come back.
Try it! It costs nothing."

Thanks for the tips Garina. I can't drop onto my heels. I had polio as a child and have severely shortened Achilles tendons. I can see if it works when I go as far as I can get, but from my knowledge of the anatomy, and visualizing the exercise I doubt it will help.
I will look into the other things,. I would rather not repeat the surgery!

Lesley,
The procedure that Garina described, works for a lot of people, including several other board members. Since the goal is to simply use gravity and inertia to yank the errant portion of the stomach back down through the diaphragm, you should be able to accomplish the same thing by seating yourself on a relatively firm, sturdy bench seat, elevating your derrière roughly 6 or 7 inches above the seat, and allowing your body to free-fall that distance, to provide the same inertial force. Just use enough free-fall distance to get the job done, without hurting your back, or anything else. Since you're the best judge of what you can safely do, if you feel that it might injure your back, don't do it.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Garina, Brandy, and Lesley.
The gas has been my primary complaint through-out this ordeal which is why I gave in to the gf,df,sf diet. I tried Beano in the beginning but don't think it helped but that was over a year ago. Guess it is time to try it again. I am thinking of doing the simplistic chicken and rice diet every day, for all meals for a couple weeks to see if it helps. I pretty much do that already but do have eggs and gf hashbrowns, glutino crackers, and bananas.
We have been in Florida for 2 1/2 years and love it. We are in the Tampa area. Frankly, I don't know how I would have made it without being able to get outside in the sun when I've been feeling so bad for so long. The sunny weather helps keep my spirits up - most days!
Take care,
Sondra

Tex,
I like your chair idea. I'm going to try that, also. Anything that will help is a great idea.
Sondra,
I'm trying to be sf, along with gf and df, but soy is in everything it seems. So, I'm buying more and more lettuce and trying, like you, to be on a more simplistic diet. I react somewhat to chicken, but I find that those small cans of tuna work well with some rice. I will also try turkey.
We live in the Panhandle area, and all the sunshine is a blessing.

Hi Garina. When I read that you are eating lettuce I cringed. I used to be a salad every day type person but can't even tolerate a little pc with gf boars head. You will notice if you read past postings that lettuce is a big no-no for most of us. It definitely causes me excess gas and pain. Also be careful with the canned meat as it could possibly contain irritants as well. Are you tolerating these things ok as the lettuce could be a lot of your gas problem?
Love the panhandle. Beautiful white sand.

For weather I WAY prefer LA, where I live right on the Marina. No humidity, mild weather year round. Never too cold or too hot, and no bugs!
The sunshine helps my spirits too.
I am sensitive to tuna, and cannot eat lettuce or any canned, processed meat. All that would cause me huge amounts of bloating and gas.
Tex - thanks for that explanation. I couldn't free fall onto a chair. My back would never stand it. I wish I could do it and avoid possible repeat surgery.

Sondra,
I hadn't given lettuce a thought, and that could very well be a problem for me, as I'm quite a salad person. I just checked the tuna can, and it did say tuna, water, salt, vegetable broth. I know it was gf, but it did say it could contain soy. It's really getting hard to choose foods. Plus, we are leaving Friday for a 10 day trip, and I usually end up with a salad on the road. I will have to change all that. Thanks for the tip.
It was so sad when the oil hit the white beaches. But, it's looking pretty good now, but I fear there is still hidden oil underneath it all. Fish are making a comeback, and so are the tourists. All is well.

Garina,
If avoiding lettuce doesn't do the trick, if you're eating any dairy products, try eliminating them for a few days or so. Dairy is notorious for causing gas and bloating.
