TamiJoy, while I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes my blood sugar is not at a level at which I am comfortable. I really believe I need to watch all carbs, not just sugar. I was always a carb freak....pasta, potatoes, rice and good bread were my downfall, not sugar. I have found that I do best not eating much of those. The cravings really become less intense when I eliminate them. I don't eat much sugar per se but have occasional dark chocolate and when baking, once in a while, use stevia variations and erythritol. I don't believe the guidelines that the diabetes sites advise....I think they're being manipulated by the pharmaceuticals....sorry....back on my soapbox.

deb is right. All carbs act the same once they hit your blood stream - they all turn into glucose. You need to cut way back on them and space what you do eat through out through out the day. Stevia might be your best bet as a sweetener.

PS exercise is crucial to getting rid of diabetes! - even just walking every day.

Dear Tamijoy,

If you have MC, you shouldn't be eating any wheat, since gluten is the major intolerance for people with MC. I don't have any advice on sugar substitutes, though.

I hope that you are able to get your diabetes under control well with dietary changes.

Love,
Martha

The best advice I know of for treating diabetes can be found in Dr Richard Bernstein's book "Diabetes Solution". You can check it out on his website:

http://www.diabetes-book.com/

He would advise you to stay away from wheat and complex carbs.

im not gonna try the whole wheat items. maybe just whole grain and try and eat less of it each week. the sugar substitute im not sure which way to go on that. probably just cut back on that. and just keep exercising and go from there. i know if the weight will come off ill be ok. just coming off slowly.

thanks everyone for the advice. i will keep posting on here to let everyone know how im doing and how things going.
