Had a talk with Emily last night. I asked her is there anyone food that doesn't bother your stomach after you eat it. She said meat. If she can handle it I like to do just meat for a day or two and see if it makes any difference. Maybe we really need to supper simplify. I think Emily is a tough case. Still waiting on the Dr. Fine Tests.

We have an appoitment on Monday. I may ask the Gi to prescribe Bentyl.

Hey Roni :)

I think if you're unable to peg down her triggers even after Dr. Fine's tests, a very simple diet is a great idea.. When I first started GF, I also went Corn F, DF, and Tomato F at the same time. I started out on the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea (instead of toast), and then slowly added things from there. It definitely helped at the time. It's a good thought.. because it seems like if I DON'T eat at all, I feel much better. STRANGE but true, tho I eat OFTEN now.. for awhile I just couldn't tolerate much of anything but that was probably my gall bladder.

Anyway, I did want to mention Bentyl (aka dicyclomine). I have had it and take it on and off for about a year now. At first it didn't help, because it contributed to me not realizing exactly WHAT was bothering me (my gall bladder) and in that way, it can be a bad thing, but otherwise, basically it just "numbs" the stomach area, which can feel pretty OK. It also has a BUNCH of side effects that can be a problem, so if they give it to you, I'd recommend starting out on 1 every 4 hours. I took 2 my first time and lost feeling in my legs. I went to get up and fell right over. It also causes me blurred vision sometimes, and makes me VERY sleepy, so watch out for those side effects. I stopped taking it on a regular basis when I realized I was basically sleeping thru my work days and going to bed just about the moment I got home. But I was taking 2 every 4 hours all day long at the time.

Bottom line: it DOES help, a bunch, but ONLY with pain. It is basically a MASK for your pain and watch out for side effects - just make sure you realize that pain is an indicator that something is wrong, and masking it doesn't make that something go away.. in that way, dicyclomine can be misleading.

Good luck!!!! I REALLY hope she at least feels a little better after a few days of all meat!!! BTW avoid sauces and too much seasoning, and beef has been known to bother a lot of us (not me personally)..

Love,
Christine

Hi Roni,

Back about the first of the year, I decided to go on an ultra low carb diet, and eat only meat and a few veggies that contain very few carbs. Normally, I eat potatoes and a little rice in the form of baked items. When I cut out the potatoes and rice, and went to ultra low carb veggies, in about two days the ketosis was pretty severe, and by the third day, I felt like Hell. I ate a few cookies that conained rice flour, and in a short time I was back to normal.

The bottom line is, if you are going to eat only meat, it has to be fatty meat, or you will eventually get what is known as "rabbit starvation". See this article:

Hi Roni,

I'm glad I just clicked on your post, just to see if I had missed anything. I do really well on a low carb diet, just don't do NO carb. and it helps to take 100 mg of potassium glutonate if you are on a very low diet. It helps prevent muscle aches and cramps. Also, you might be interested in the post I just made about B vitamins and all my posts about sulphur dioxide and sulfites. I just found out that I'm really sensitive, today, after tons of research. I never imagined: and it accounts for many many of the symptoms I attributed to gluten and milk.

Anyway, if meat doesn't disagree with her: hamburger works best for me, as does Jimmy Dean sausage (it's gf, & really good with just a little sugar free maple syrup), bacon, pork chops, beef of any kind. I don't do very well with chicken, or eggs, so you might ask her about that. Just don't complicate things by having her eat hot dogs or processed meat products until you get it figured out more. I apologize if I'm being bossy, and for butting in. Please ignore if this isn't helpful, honestly. She will lose weight on less than 10 grams of carbs at each meal, so that might be a good guideline.

All my best, Marsha

That is a very interesting article link in Waynes post about meat/diet. Make sure you have a few minutes to read it- IT IS LONG, but worth the read.

We hunt , so eat alot of Moose, Caribou, Venison, game birds and fish. In the last few months I have began buying beef steaks for the fat content because the fat content in most of the things we hunt is NIL.

Nothing like a big ol fat juicy steak off the grill - medium rare pleeez.

Oh, yes - give Emily a good juicy steak if she likes it. There is a group of us meat lovers here who have discovered that our guts do very well with meat. Welcome Emily to the "club". I usually eat some veggies and/or fruit with my meat but not always. I haven't experienced the ketosis - but then again I eat plenty of fatty meat. I stay very lean even though I eat very fatty meat and often lots of it. I often use meat drippings and fat for sauteeing of vegetables - gives a wonderful flavor to the veggies w/o adding sauce.

Love,
Karen
