rotation diet

Post by Nancy »

What are your thoughts on rotation diets? I've been doing some reading on it. Seems like a good idea to keep from becoming sensitive to the foods we can eat.

Hi Nancy,

I know that our expert on diet here, Mary Beth, recommends rotation wholeheartedly. As does the MRT program. I try to roate every 3 days, but it is not always possible, because I have SO many sensitivities.

Good luck if you decide to try it,

Polly

I shall try rotation because it seems every time I find a "safe" food, I binge on it & it eventually turns against my gut. Rotation may be the solution. Does one just change their diet plan every few days or is there more to it?

So can anyone tell me about how to go about working a rotation diet? Books to look at or blogs?

Good question. I was just going to write down what I can eat and when, and tweak it from there as experience shows me I can eat something more frequently or less frequently.

Cory, that's exactly what happens to me. Besides getting a handle on this flare, that's the main reason I want to try coming up with a rotation diet. There's not a whole lot I can still eat, and I don't want to lose any of it. I'd also like to find out if there are other things I can eat--if I've been attributing a reaction to something that I am not really reacting to.

I am terrified I will lose potatoes. That will leave me with no starches at all! And nothing to fill me.

Well, good luck with your research ladies and let's follow-up on this topic later. I suspect there will be foods we can eat occasionally vs. foods that will always be a safe bet.
Marliss, I'm with you, I don't want to lose any of the precious food items I can eat now. I may keep a rotation list separate from my list of 'for sure' safe foods. The rotation list would be for food items I am okay with eating a small portion of on occasion. I feel like Sherlock Holmes trying to figure this all out. Our diets are personal, puzzling, and take a lot of sleuthing.

I rotate as much as I can, but like Polly, I don't have enough foods to rotate as well as I'd like. I think the biggest advantage to rotation is that it makes it more obvious to determine when a food is a problem.

I can't say that rotation has helped minimize the number of foods I've had to eliminate since I've had to eliminate all but eight foods (nine, now that I can eat mango). Plus, I eat corn flour or cornstarch every day and have never noticed a reaction to it. I have wondered if that's because I didn't eat any corn products for two years, and only began eating it in desperation after I had to eliminate so many other foods. I wonder if it helped that I avoided it while I still had a leaky gut (if I had one).

I still rotate now because it gives me a little variety from day to day, and I don't ever wonder what I'll be eating - it's all laid out in a rotation menu calendar. I eat virtually the same meals every three days.

The best explanation of a rotation diet that I've seen is in the book "The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook" by Marjorie Hurt Jones, R.N. Her rotation includes more foods than I'm able to eat, but it does explain the need to rotate foods in the same families and gives a sample rotation diet.

Thanks, Gloria! I hadn't thought about foods in the same families. That's pretty obvious, now that I think about it. Good place to start for direction.

Well I'm working on this rotation diet. Taking a while to get the groceries lined up and a menu plan going. But tonight we are having fish. Not a big fan besides tuna fish canned, but it is actually smelling pretty good. Maybe I am just hungry :) Some sweet potatoes and brocolli as sides. Boy does my house reek. Had to add fish to stretch it to 4 days. No chicken for now so had to add something for protein on day 4. Kinda fun actually as I tend to get into a bit of a rut food wise.
