So...when I have C what to do?

Post by Lesley »

I am in a quandary. I seem to have to take every stool softener and laxative available all together for days to have a BM, and then I go all day soft serve, and the next day it's back to C.

What to do? Do test different foods to see what happens? Which foods? Dairy? Gluten? Corn? Rice? Chicken? Eggs, maybe?
I have started juicing again, once a day, so I am getting vegetable nutrients. I do carrots, spinach, blueberries, apples, mangoes, cucumber so far. I want to try some other greens if all goes well, although I am not sure what that means right now. My last vitamin and mineral tests were not great although I am taking the supplements, so I am hoping to get better results next time.
I would LOVE a vitamix so I could make smoothies including the fiber, but it's not in the cards right now.

When I am "stuck" I get very few gurgles, but I do get some horrible cramps.

I am still fighting the esophagitis pain and it hurts horribly to swallow. No reply from the GI, although my PCP forwarded messages on to him. Frustrating is not the word for it, and I am at a loss to find one that isn't 4 letter and an expletive.

Any ideas, gang?

Lesley, have you tried magnesium? So many people are lacking in magnesium and magnesium is being touted now as important as Vitamin D. Maybe a slight overdose of a magnesium supplement might help? Also, there are various kinds of magnesium, so it is important to get a high quality one.

Hi,

I have no idea what to tell you to do, since I spend my days trying to stop going. I just wanted you to know someone hears you and understands how you are feeling.

Hugs,

I don't really know what would help either Lesley?
And I don't know which is worse?!

Well, that sounds to me like pretty good progress. Previously, if I recall correctly, the soft serve would be followed by a relapse of watery D.

I would say that continuing to use stool softeners is about as good a plan as any, to promote healing. If you try to eat foods to which you are sensitive, in order to promote a BM, the inflammation that they generate will surely be counterproductive.

 These are uncharted waters.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

This is where I am at too Lesley. I take 2-3 Phillips stool softeners a day and it still takes 2-3 days to get the results to appear consistently. I am afraid to add more fiber until I get my MRT results. I am glad that you are able to juice-- you have to be feeling stronger getting better nutrition.

As to Jenny's question "which is worse?" I would say D is worse. While C has it's own set of problems, C have never made me leave a meeting at work running to the bathroom or made me wear an adult diaper for fear of an accident. I actually feel fortunate to be C prominent as odd as that sounds.

Not really. I have been plagued by C for most of this. At the start there was watery D almost non stop. Then, after prednisone and imodium I went to C, and weaned off the prednisone very painfully. I didn't use the entocort for D, if you remember, but to try to break the cycle, but the C got so bad I gave it up cold turkey because I hadn't been on it for long.

Since then I have been struggling with the C and soft serve type D for a full 24-36 hours non stop and back to C. And so on.

I know I have been absorbing more nutrients because not much is coming out in the stool, and I have put back all the weight I lost (unfortunately!).
I have been taking powdered magnesium, and I know that can cause BMs. I am ever hopeful! Stool softeners too, Carol. But the C can go on for 2 weeks in spite of huge amounts of stool softeners AND laxatives, and get so bad I am desperate. Which is where I am now. That's why I ask how I FORCE a BM before I burst.

Hi Lesley,
I was looking at this article on Intestinal Motility Disorders and thought you might like to see it. They mention a variety of meds but I was most interested in prokinetics med used to treat severe constipation (on page #3, I believe). I would not put my constipation in that category but I would classify yours as severe. Of course maybe you've tried some of these. Still it might be worth a look.

One word...asparagus.

It works like a charm for me. It's not unusual with Mast Cell disorders to have alternating D and C due to changes in motility caused by the many different mediators associated with mast cell degranulation.

It's funny many of my doctors were completely dumbfounded by my having both D and C initially. Thankfully my very wonderful GI doc recognized it as a potential mast cell indicator.

Anyway, when the C cycles through I have asparagus daily. It always helps get my bowels working again. I realize that might be a "no no" food for you, but if not give it a try.

Hmm, D or C...which is worse? Whichever one is affecting me on that particular day!!!

Hope things improve for you soon,

Julie

I eat asparagus daily, either in my juice, or cooked. I love it. It doesn't get me moving. After my bouts of soft serve D with cramps and bloating I have 2-3 days of relative comfort, and then the C starts building up. Then it starts to get really BAD and I get desperate.

Carol, I have serious issues with bowel motility. The article looks interesting. I will read it thoroughly tomorrow. Too tired tonight. Thanks for it.
