Decision Made

Post by kate_ce1995 »

I talked to my doc today. I will have a hysterectomy in early November. I'm a bit sad, but I know my life is at stake. I'm scared, but hopefully it will be a smooth surgery...I've had 3 surgeries in my life and all have gone pretty smoothly. I am looking forward to life on the other side.

One thing that worried me about what he said was that when I go home, I'll be given percocet and motrin. Its the motrin that worries me. Thats what triggered my MC. I am able to take naproxen for several days for cramps, so I guess I will just hope my poor gut holds up okay. I will be very good about not eating gluten, and I haven't had to take the naproxen more than once or twice since July.

Katy,
I'd say don't worry about the Motrin but I guess in your place, I'd be a little worried too. Maybe your gut is sufficiently healed to withstand a brief assault. Good luck.

This is probably a dumb question, but why is your doctor prescribing motrin? Is that chiseled in stone? I realize the combination is standard treatment for certain conditions, but would it be the end of the world to prescribe a substitute med?

I suspect, based on past abdominal surgery, that its to help reduce inflamation, and as we all know, there aren't many other choices for that.

I will ask him more before surgery.

Hi Katy,

I'm glad that the decision has been made...I know it's hard to wait, but you will feel so much better when this is behind you.

Take care....JJ

Hi Katy,

I had my hysterectomy in 2000. It was my first surgery and I was scared to death.

The surgery and recovery went very well. I only had percocet, no motrin. I also was able to quit the percocet in less than a week. Just make sure you take it really easy and not over do it.

It your hysterectomy going to be a full or a partial? Your young and that helps a lot in the time it takes to recover!

Hugs!

Morning Kate,

I am also one who has had a hysterectomy and completely bypassed the drugs afterwards. The pain was less than I had thought but did not want to mess with drugs and MC. Mine was caused by a football sized fibroid that was growing at an exceptional rate.

Good luck and you have made the right decision.

Love, Maggie

Lori and Maggie,

My Aunts both had similar experiences with the pain medication. One of my Aunts didn't have anything more than motrin from the afternoon of her surgery on. I am holding on to that in some ways. I had a laparoscopy in 2000 that started me down this hormonal problem hell (well my body did that for me) and I remember being in quite a lot of pain afterward, but nothing that lying on the couch and taking ibuprofen didn't take reasonable care of. I should have had a day or two of percocet, but I had been nauseaous before the surgery because the endo was tying my gut together, and all my mom could tell me was that percocet makes her queezy and the last thing I wanted to do was throw up!

This surgery is because of bleeding problems associated with 4 fibroids...2 about 6 centimeters and 2 small.
