A return of inflammation
I was doing so well--I was on the MRT diet and everything was going along. As I mentioned, I use a 1-10 scale and occasionally I even got a 10! Wow.
Well, that's in the past. I tried to introduce olive oil about a month ago and must have had a return of inflammation, because it's been steadily downhill, and now I'm spending time awake at night listening to my intestines gurgle and feeling that hated liquidy feeling. Anyone else have that? Feeling yourself digest is NOT fun. It's like I'm some kind of sewage processing plant.
The worst is that now I have tried GF/EF/DF/SF and given up all my MRT yellow and red foods (and not even been able to introduce all the green ones), so I feel hopeless. Is it too early? Did others get better and worse just using diet alone and just have to persevere through the bad times? Is it possible that this is just a setback and good times will return without drugs? Or is now the time to try drugs?
I don't know why the diet worked for a while and now it has simply stopped. I suppose it could be the buckwheat I introduced right around the time of the olive oil. I could also have become sensitive to something I used to be able to eat, but potatoes are about the only candidate, and they seem pretty innocent.
I would be interested to hear whether others experienced a period of being better, then getting worse, then better again on the road to recovery?
Thanks so much for any help you can give. Sorry for the down post.

Re: A return of inflammation
On Wall street there are various theories. One of them is the "random walk" theory, that the market may go up or down rather unpredictably. Some people use graphs and sophisticated formulas to "predict" future movement, but at the end of the day no one really knows what is going to happen to the market next week.tnelson wrote:I was doing so well--I was on the MRT diet and everything was going along...

My experience with my guts is the same. I can be a total saint on my diet, total gluten free (and avoid everything else my labs tell me to do). If my "D" comes and goes, it almost seemed to have no relation to what I was eating. I respect that some people do respond to diet alone and wish that I could have that result.
I think some of us with hard-core MC will need meds, or expect occasional flares that will not subside. As you know, Entocort is the only thing that works for me over the long term.

T,
More than a few members here have found that they react to buckwheat, so if I were in your situation, I would be highly suspicious of that.
Normally, olive oil should be safe, but in recent years, there has been a problem with the sale of adulterated olive oil that contains cheaper oils. Some of it is adulterated with soy oil, and so it's possible that soy or something else in your olive oil could also be causing your problem.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks Bob and Tex. Oh, that would make me mad if they put soy in the olive oil, but of course I'll never know. Perhaps I'll buy a more expensive oil and try it again later on. I think right now the thing to do is to cut out the buckwheat, then if the "random walk" walks the wrong way (like off a cliff) I will see a doctor (shudder) about medication.
Thanks for helping me through this hard time. I guess we all go through ups and downs, right?

Hi T,
I've used the inexpensive olive oils and the expensive ones. I've been using Paul Newman's extra virgin organic for awhile and it is in my regular olive oil section of grocery store. It comes from Tunisia and actually tastes like real olive oil. It is not the cheapest and not the most expensive but seems to taste like real olive oil. I've had inexpensive and expensive olive oils that I think have been adulterated in that they don't taste like olive oil. I believe olive oils marketed as "Italian" olive oil are possibly more likely to be adulterated. If you can find a California olive oil that probably be a good choice (less likely to be adulterated. ) There is a huge world wide demand for "Italian" olive oil which I believe adds to the adulteration issues.
PS. Even with drugs (Entocort) there are ups and downs with this disease.
Best wishes, Brandy

T- I can relate to the night time noises. Before changing my diet, it literally sounded like water running through pipes. There'a a medical term for it which I forgot. The doctor chuckled a bit but there's no humor in it when it's happening to you. At one time, every time I changed position in bed it would happen.
This is good to know about olive oil, and it now makes some sense as to why I had a swift and unpleasant reaction to an oil that should have been pretty safe. I think my guts are super sensitive right now to everything. Apparently the practice of adulterating the oil is very widespread. I checked the one I used and it is "made in Italy," so it very well could have been fixed up with other ingredients.
As to nighttime noise, Deb, your post inspired me to look up the word for gurgling: Borborygmus
Borborygmus does sound like what's going on, but I don't think it will be a household word anytime soon!

LOL! I hear the gurgles when I lay down at night on my left side. Not sure why it's most prominent then. Luckily DH is usually asleep by then. Otherwise, he'd make fun of me. I haven;t eaten Buckwheat in a while. I tested mildly reactive to it on celiac cross-reactivity testing. I always suspect grains before anything else. It's like I'm some kind of sewage processing plant.
I always buy extra virgin, cold pressed (preferably first cold pressed) olive oil. Greek and Spanish oils can be excellent, in addition to Italian and Californian. California makes some organic oils -- I wonder if they are worth it, or whether olive trees are not routinely sprayed with chemicals on conventional farms.
THANK YOU Tex and Jenny for the diagnostic advice! I do believe buckwheat may have been responsible for the deteriorating condition. Who knew? Thanks everyone! Buckwheat is GONE never to return. Like you, Jenny, it was fine at first, then got worse and worse. The horrible headaches I used to have (which went away with the gluten) also came back, but sporadically enough that I didn't connect it. Now I am pretty sure they were buckwheat related.
