Motels with kitchens question

Post by Lucy »

Have any of you ever stayed at one of those Extended Stay America places?

While we were in Ft.Worth, I took a look at the handicap room there, but now, I'm looking for a place like that with a kitchen for my annual respite (if I live so long! Ha!).

Don't laugh, but equal to the need for a kitchen and cleanliness and safety, the comfort of the mattress is of upmost importance. Perhaps some of you have tried one of these or another similar long-term stay type suite.

Thanks for your comments.

Luce-

My in-laws have stayed at the one near us and they seemed to like it! We have a small house (welcome to CA, LOL!) and they used to stay here, but we no longer have a spare bedroom so when they come for a week or so, they have found they like the extended stay place since it's "more than just a room". This particular one was within walking distance to a nice grocery store, Starbucks, and a few retaurants, bagel place etc....(my MIL doesn't like driving here - they're from the midwest and she thinks freeways here are too big - 6 lanes - and fast!)

Also during the week my kids have activities, homework and such...On those nights they just did their own thing - I know they cooked some - I'm just not sure how outfitted the place is with pots, pans etc....but they found it quite comfortable - sort of like a little apartment - and very reasonably priced considering you can do all of your cooking and save a lot that way....

I would gather quality varies, depending on the area...we have a lot of upscale hotels for business travelers, conventions etc....a place that wasn't *nice* would have troulbe here as there is a lot of competition for the business...

Thanks Mary!

Sometimes it pays to have a small house! Ha!
(Just kidding, I'm sure you love your inlaws.)

Rule of thumb I go by (sort of) is when the place is new, it's more likely to be in good shape.

Since I wrote that post last night, I looked up a StudioPlus where I think I've actually stayed a few years ago. That time we'd taken my Mom along to take her to a museum, and she and I stayed in one of their handicap rooms, and we'd wanted a kitchen that time as well. They have several floor plans, but this one had a king or queen sized bed, a small sofa bed, and a really well equipped kitchen. I plan on taking a few small pans just in case. Can't even remember going into my sister and bil's room -- too busy with Mom, and they always came over to ours. Will have to ask her what theirs was like.

Other place that I'll probably stay is a specific Clarion Suites place which looks as though it's similarly equipped. I think both of these places are close to major traffic arteries, so should be able to "feel" my way to the nearest Whole Foods for the perishable part of the menu.

Right now, I'm fighting a sinus infection. Those things sure can sneak up on me. Have found that if I treat them aggressively, that I can get rid of them without complications without the use of an antibiotic. (You now why I don't want one of those!).

Tomorrow, we'll have a nice fall day, so I'm hoping that more brisk weather will perk me right up to do all that I need to get done before the respite. Thanks for that encouraging information about the lodging!
Hurricane season isn't yet over, so if we have to leave this area again, I'm going to try to book that place in Ft. Worth, probably. I really need to acquire a brochure from all the places that would be appropriate for the kitchen, handicapped facilities or both. It's nice to have those phone numbers at your finger tips in case of an emergency.

Woudn't you know it -- Atlanta playoff is probably going to be rained out tomorrow night! Also, my friends in Atlanta had planned a birding trip to Jekyll Island which is to the southeast of them down near Fla, I believe. They are planning to leave home about 10 AM in the morning, so they'll encounter some of the rain, etc., along the way down. I'm a bit ill at ease for fear that they could get trapped in rising water or street flooding, but hopefully, there are places they can pull over safely til it passes.

At least Tammy is moving pretty quickly, but it's probably going to go right through Atlanta during game time. These friends were supposed to visit a place with their tour on Friday that can only be reached by boat, so that is a bit concerning. There are other things planned on Sat. and Sun., and sometimes more birds will settle in around a storm as they run out of energy faster. Perhaps they'll end up having better birding days at least.

Thanks for your help!!!

Ah Luce-

You crack me up  Yes - I get along just fine with my in-laws since they live 2200 miles away and I don't have to incorporate them in our holiday plans  Seriously that is the major issue with my friends who have "in-law issues".... Plus they are too far away to "meddle"....

Bummer about the sinuses...what do you *do* to prevent a full-blown Sinus infection? Ya know - that's what started this whole thing for me - a stubborn SI, 3 different antibiotics, a c-diff infection then whammo- MC!! I only get one every few years but they are awful!!!

Hope the latest hurricane gets nowhere near you - boy I think we've had enough of that stuff!!

Take care,

Mary

Sinus infection...

What's been working pretty well for me is to take a prophalactic antihistimine, and today, I've added a steroid type nasal spray due to the fact that I waited too long to start the antihistimine. Probably would've taken care of it during the time I was busy evacuating as I'd noticed I was sneezing more both here and in Ft.Worth, but just got distracted and didn't have time to get the medication. I like the ones that don't make me drousy.

I just now thought of it, but usually, I take at least one guafenasin (can't spell it at the moment) tablet which is a good decongestant so that the area will drain thoroughly. This can be a big help, particularly when one has allowed things to get too far along like I have this time.

For some reason, when I asked the pharmacist at Walgreen's when i bought my now long out-of-date bottle, she handed me the bottle stating that they keep it behind the counter, but it isn't a controlled substance, so don't know why that particular one would be kept off the shelves???

You can try to fan some salty water up into your nostrils if you wish. I sometimes will take a steam bath or shower, but if I'm pretty sick, I pull a chair up to the basin, and just fill it up with hot water, and dampen a wash cloth with as much of it as I can and place it over my sinus areas on my face. Sometimes that will help a little with the drainage as well as the discomfort. Don't think I'm THAT far gone yet, but had been having hot flashes with sweats and wondering why since the temps outside have dropped so much in the last few days. Kept blaming it on the cloud cover and atmospheric pressure..dah. This morning and today, I realized that I'd been running fever, and that's when I figured out why.

Was also too weak to even look at clothes when the whole family took Mom to Galleria with my sis who needed to take back some slacks. When I get fever like that, first thing I notice is the shakiness that goes along with the weakness.

Used to take antihistimines during peak of certain pollens each year, but later, decided to try to take them only when I noticed a little more allergic type irritation. Problem is I keep attributing the individual symptoms to other things, like the weather, for example, and just don't think about it enough to put all the symptoms together.

Today, I had a hard time staying awake for the first playoff game this afternoon. I think that these infections make me sleepy sometimes, particularly with a fever, but also, since I don't normally take any pain killers or other central nervous system depressants, when I take a single Tylenol like I did this evening for discomfort, it really knocks me for a loop. Anyway, I think that the sleep itself has a healing effect, particularly for these sinus things.

If at all possible, I highly recommend putting off whatever you can, curling up in bed, and sleeping as much as you possibly can as soon as you recognize you're getting a sinus problem.

When I took antihistimines regularly during allergy season, I didn't take the 24 hr type every day, but rather alternated it with a shorter acting version so that my sinuses wouldn't get too dryed out. Sometimes if you can get by with a lesser amt, or alternate days without any if it holds you, it has the same positive effect.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and Mary, I've not yet checked out the allergen status of either of the two meds I'm taking. That's another reason I've not been taking them on a regular basis, but if they have anything on my no-no list, it's not been enough to cause a noticeable reaction, but of course, I'm not interested in doing silent damage so eventually I should get this checked, right?

I have a home recipe that helps to clear the sinus. It is so simple but can help at times.

Narium Nasal Mist

1/2 teas. salt
1/2 teas bi-carb soda
500mls boiled water

Squirt twice in each nostril 6 time per day

Love
